All About Bamboo Flooring

Bamboo is becoming a more popular hardwood flooring choice for many people. It is brighter than most hardwood floors, and it has a very modern aesthetic. The great thing about bamboo is that it’s durable. Bamboo plants grow very quickly, and they are very strong. People have built entire buildings and schools out of bamboo alone! Bamboo is just as durable as conventional hardwood floorings. What sets bamboo apart from other hardwood floors is it’s look. It has unique colors that make a room look bright and clean. Another huge benefit of bamboo is that it’s very eco-friendly! Trees take decades, if not centuries, to grow to full size. Bamboo can grow that same amount of length in just a couple of years. It grows so fast and is completely natural.

For optimum hardness with bamboo flooring, you must ensure that your bamboo flooring is made from the species called Moso. It should be a minimum of five years old to make sure that it’s totally durable and of the highest quality. In order for bamboo flooring to be less hard, many manufactures perform a process on the flooring called carbonization. When bamboo is carbonized, it turns into a darker amber color.

Bamboo is a grass; so naturally, it contains higher moisture content than real wood does. To deal with this problem, you have to make sure that bamboo flooring is dried for a long enough time. Drying it prevents cracking and warping of the bamboo. According to bamboohardwoodflooring.net, most brands of bamboo flooring have moisture content of seven to fourteen percent. Ideal moisture contents should be under eight percent. Anything above that is more likely to have ripples or cracks. But, as mentioned earlier, if you buy bamboo flooring made from the species Moso that is at least five years old, you won’t run into that problem. The older the bamboo is, the more mature it is, and the lower the moisture will be. Younger bamboo that hasn't fully matured will have a higher moisture percentage.

The best way to find out if the bamboo flooring is suitable for you or not is to test it out! So many companies offer product samples so you can have the bamboo flooring in parts of your home for a couple of weeks or a couple of months to see how you like it, and if it’s something you would like to continue with or not. All retailers will be happy to send you a sample to figure out if it’s right for you or not.
