Master Your Garden This Spring

Written by Posted On Monday, 10 April 2017 00:41

Spring is here, and with it comes a growing desire to get out and freshen up the yard and garden. If you are planning to list your home soon, now is a great time to prepare the exterior of your property for maximum curb appeal impact. Master Gardener programs around the Bay Area have been holding their spring sales and tours, so you can find inspiration as well as some of the best prices and varieties of local plants and garden vegetation.

As posted in the  Mercury News April is the time for plant sales; Still to come is the Great Tomato Sale in Contra Costa County on April 22nd,.  This sale will include all kinds of tomatoes, from heirloom to grape tomatoes, to unique colors such as purple, black and orange varieties Contra Costa County, Santa Clara, San Mateo with San Francisco, each have Master Gardener programs. These community programs not only provide specialized and unique plants and vegetables which you can buy, they also offer educational workshops and hands-on demonstrations. You can even become a Certified Master Gardener yourself, a wonderful way to help your green thumb improve, and also help others in the community.

A key focus of these Master Gardener programs is to hone in on specific plants which can thrive in the various microclimates and habitats found around the Bay Area. By testing, studying and find ways to help these plants flourish, Master Gardeners can help you have a vibrant garden and yard based on where you live.

If your yard needs a landscape update but you are not sure what you want to, or should plant, there will be two worthwhile Native Plant Tours coming p through the Master Gardener Programs. Bringing in native plants to your yard is a simple way to help keep your land healthier and thriving, especially when it comes to weather extremes such as drought.

The Going Native Tour has been going on for 15 years now and will feature up to 60 different native gardens around the South and North Bay April 22nd- 23rd. The Bring Back the Natives Tour has been put on for the last 12 years, featuring gardens in Alameda and Contra Costa Counties. This year there will be up to 30 gardens to tour on Sunday, May 7th. This could make an excellent early Mother’s Day outing too.

No matter where you live in the Bay Area, you are sure to find inspiration with these Master Gardener events, and get ready to update your yard and garden.
