When buying a home, a large percentage of buyers with school aged children prioritize school systems high on their list. While home prices can be directly related to the quality of schools you still want to provide the best school system you can for your student.

There are many ways to evaluate and choose a school system. A school visit can go a long wat to get the flavor of a school system. Here is a list of questions to ask of a school when on your school visit:

What makes your school different from the others?

Different schools will have different focuses and philosophies usually implemented by leadership. Make sure the school’s curriculum matches your child’s strengths and interests. Along the same lines ask what the school has the most pride in… It could be a program, maybe a new library, whatever the answer it gives you some insight into what the school values.

What is your disciplinary policy?

The disciplinary policies from school to school can vary greatly. Line up a schools disciplinary policy with your own. And, don’t forget to ask about their bullying policies.

How is learning personalized in the classroom?

Every child is different and have different learning styles. What works for one child may not for another. How is your child’s style identified and catered to?

What do you do if my child is struggling?

Ask how they identify and implement strategies for a student that is struggling. Prompt intervention of a struggling student is key in rectifying the situation.

Ask the school to walk you through a typical day

See if there is a good balance of academics, socialization, enrichment and down time. A student needs a balance of activities to thrive.

How much homework can I expect my student to have?

A good rule of thumb is about 10 minutes per grade. Homework is a good thing and help instill good habits but too much can be a burden and stress out your child.

What is your staff turnover?

There will always be a turnover in staff, but if they start reporting a heavy turnover of 20to 30% it could show that teachers and staff are unhappy. Also ask about school leaders. Has the leadership been in place for a long time or is there frequent turnover of principals vice principals etc…

What are your thoughts on parental involvement?

The best learning environments are when a school and parents partner to make the most of a students education. Is the school encouraging your involvement or do they prefer you don’t get to involved?

How is my child’s progress shared with me and how often? Do I have access to the teachers to ask questions?

While you don’t want to be “THAT” parent you certainly want to be able to share your concerns and ask questions as they arise. Are the teachers available by email regularly or is connect limited to parent teacher conferences?

What am I not asking that I should be?

This is a great way to see what their response is. They will most likely feel obligated to say something and this is just a great way to get a view into who is leading the school.

Don’t be afraid to ask your own questions, this is your chance to find the best school you can for your child.
