If you do a considerable amount of work in your garage or workshop, chances are it can become pretty cluttered. Add a vehicle or two, and finding space becomes even more of a challenge. Garage workbenches can provide a convenient space to get your projects finished, but you can make all of the storage and work surfaces do double duty and give you even more room to get things done.
Folding Workbenches
Workbenches are usually static features that you push against the wall to give you space when you don't need them. There are two solutions for workbenches. One is to transform it into a Murphy-style table, with hinged legs that fold in so that the table folds flat against the wall when not in use. This can also be used as an extension for a table saw when you're working with long pieces of timber to provide extra stability when you don't have an extra pair of hands to help out.
Another solution is to convert a shelf into a workbench. Just purchase a heavy-duty piece of shelving and position it on the wall so that it's low enough to use comfortably. This can also be attached with hinges to fold away when you don't need it.
Adding Comfort to Your Floor
Anyone who stands to work for long periods of time knows that strain that a hard, cement floor can put on your feet, legs and back. There are many alternative flooring options that are very affordable and provide additional benefits. One of the more popular options is S-groove flexible rubber or foam tile flooring. It's skid-proof, resists moisture and stains, and it provides just the right amount of give for comfort. It also comes in a range of colors so you can add a little visual appeal, and has a textured surface.
Having Your Tools at Hand
Hanging tools from a pegboard is nothing new. It allows you to keep the ones you the use most handy and organized. A little tweak to make them even more accessible is to mount a wide magnetic band over your work surface instead. Imagine the type of magnetic knife racks that many people have in the kitchen, only bigger and longer.
There are many other ways that you can maximize the space in your garage. Scour the web or talk to an associate at your local home building supply store for ideas.
