Workbenches are usually static features that you push against the wall to give you space when you don't need them. There are two solutions for workbenches. One is to transform it into a Murphy-style table, with hinged legs that fold in so that the table folds flat against the wall when not in use. This can also be used as an extension for a table saw when you're working with long pieces of timber to provide extra stability when you don't have an extra pair of hands to help out.

Another solution is to convert a shelf into a workbench. Just purchase a heavy-duty piece of shelving and position it on the wall so that it's low enough to use comfortably. This can also be attached with hinges to fold away when you don't need it.
