How do you know if your Thermostat is bad?

Written by Posted On Wednesday, 12 September 2018 05:18

Thermostats are like the brains that control the temperature of your home. These smart devices work to preserve energy and keep the temperature levels regulated to just how you would want to see them. No matter what time of the year it is, having a thermostat that are malfunctioning can cause a lot of problems for you. Some of the most common problems that you might face with a malfunctioning home smart thermostat are:

  • Wrong readings of the temperature
  • Failure to give warnings at low battery
  • Inefficiency with lighting and energy preservation
  • Inability to maintain the temperature
  • For digital display, incorrect display can be a sign of a problem
  • The need to use manual methods to control temperature around the home

In such cases, it is always better that you do not delay the obvious for too long and get started on fixing the thermostat which has gone back.

To move things along in the right direction, we have prepared a list of helpful pointers that should help you in the given task. Here are a few immediate steps that you can take to fix the thermostat and have it up and running in no time.

Things to check first

Here are some of the things you need to check as a preliminary drill. If the thermostats are not working then the chances that it is something very minor that needs fixing are relatively high. So as a rule, begin with the most obvious things first.

Air filters: Check if the air filters need to be replaced. This is even more important if you have pets at home that shed ever so frequently or you live in an area which experiences a high traffic all year round.

Batteries: Sometimes we tend to over the most obvious: always check the batteries before you get started with the fixing of the thermostat. If you are lucky, the whole fault could be of batteries that are looking to be replaced.

Settings: Take a look at the settings as well to ensure things are the way you left them the last time: it is even more important if you have kids at home.

Leveling of thermostats

This is something we do not need for the new thermostats but the ones that are a bit older, it is needed there. They used a bimetallic strip which when is not leveled properly can give faulty results. So, if you feel that you have a thermostat of this sort at home, then begin by checking their level. If the strip is not leveled properly then you know where the fault lies.

Change the location

The location of your thermostat is pivotal. If you have it placed in the area which is not coherent with the overall temperature of the house then you would not be getting the desired results. If you feel that its current placement is affecting its results then begin by having it installed where you feel that it would perform better. For most of these smart home devices to work, you need to ensure that you are using them in the right manner. For these devices to be smart, they need to be in the right environment receiving the right commands.

Check the sensors

Another problem with thermostats most often is the number of sensors it is made to work with. If it is not receiving proper data, to begin with, the chances of it producing poor results and showing lack of efficiency increases. Therefore, you need to ensure that you have an ample number of sensors installed with your thermostat. If this is not so, then try to add another sensor to the device and see how it performs then. It is also a working solution if the thermostat is placed too far away from your room. An added sensor will work as a repeater to give true readings to the smart thermostatand have it deliver the right results.

Wiring

If you feel that you are good with electronic devices then do take a look at the wiring of the thermostat. A faulty wire or even loose wiring can affect its working. If you can, try fixing this on your own or call in for help if things look a little complicated.

For smart homes to function properly, the devices need to be in their best form all the time. So, make sure that you always analyze the problem and try to get to the root cause of it to prevent it from repeating again. Smart thermostats are a game changer but they need to be looked after properly too. If the above-mentioned steps do not resolve the problem for you, then don’t hesitate to call in for expert help. The sooner you have the things resolved the better it would be.
