Communication Rules!

Communication!  How often have we had that word drilled into us.  But do we really get it?  I just finished a transaction that pointed out to me how much we have to concentrate on letting everyone know what is going on.  If the news is bad, if the news is good, if the news is “Gee, I really don’t know anything new” you have to COMMINICATE it.  No one likes sitting in the dark wondering what is going on during one of the most important transactions in their life.  We have to tell everyone, everything we know.  I knew a Realtor once who prided herself on great communication.  She told me that she just tells everyone what they want to hear and then goes and tries to make that happen.  WOW!  I guess we need to clarify that the communication always has to be honest too!  I never trusted anything she had to say after that.  I often tell people I am not clever enough to be a good liar.  Being a good liar involves remembering everything you tell others.  Otherwise you can’t keep your story straight.  If you always tell the truth you never have to remember which lie you told so you can keep things consistent.  Too much brain power for me.

I really got off on a tangent there. My message started out to be how important it is to keep everyone in the loop.  All parties to a real estate transaction need to know what is going on at all times.  Returning phone calls, carrying through on promises, attending to details that is all part of good communication. That was really lacking on one side of a recently closed transaction and believe me it was noticed.  All the other parties to the transaction noticed it, commented on it and honestly it will make all parties expect the same next time they are thrown into a transaction with that person.  That is shaky ground to stand on.  I want to be counted on not mistrusted.  Communicate, communicate, communicate!
