Home Tips: Buying The Perfect Tools - Why and How

Written by Posted On Monday, 30 June 2014 03:37

It does not matter if you are an avid DIY-er who does most of their repairs and minor construction on your own or if you are someone who needs a screwdriver a few times every year; it is the same – you need quality tools that will allow you to do everything that you need to do but that will also not burn a hole in your pocket.

The main reason why you need to find the perfect tools for your needs is your safety. There are innumerable stories about people who bought all kinds of cheap power tools that shorted out, that zapped the users or that resulted in serious or less serious injury. Of course, there is always the matter of reliability, i.e. not having to deal with a tool that got broken or became unusable just when you need it.

The bigger question is how to find the perfect tools for your needs?

1. Consider your needs

Not everyone needs an entire garage packed with all kinds of tools, smaller, bigger, titanium, giant power tools with which you can build a house. For some people, a simple set of basic tools such as wrenches, screwdriver, pliers and maybe a drill of some kind will be enough. In fact, for most people who are not into DIY, these will be perfectly enough for their small repair needs.

However, if you consider yourself a more serious DIY person, you might want to start considering some serious tools as well. Of course, not all DIY-ers require the same tools and you will once again need to consider your actual needs and what you want to have at your side at all time.

2. Consider your budget

If you are not careful and if you start going berserk when buying tools and especially power tools, you might find yourself spending quite a lot of money on it. Add a drill here, a circular saw there, pick up a set of fancy new screwdrivers from the most expensive manufacturer and before you know it, you are down a few thousand dollars.

The worse thing would be to skimp on your tools and go for the cheapest knock-off versions and brands. You need to understand that your safety is paramount and there is nothing quite as dangerous as cheap, malfunctioning tools that are just waiting to make holes in your body and/or slice off parts of that same body.

3. Consider going cordless

There is a very good reason why more and more people are buying cordless tools. First of all, they are more convenient to use as there are no cables and you can also use them anywhere you want, regardless of whether there is a socket nearby. In addition to this, they are easier to store and with the new high-tech batteries, they are quicker than ever to charge and they last longer as well.

One thing that we would recommend is that if you are looking for those truly heavy-duty power tools, then corded versions might still be a better idea due to the continuous and level power output.
