You should check your credit report at least once every year to make sure it doesn't contain any errors. Identity theft is on the rise and  thieves can do a lot of damage before they're caught. Reviewing your credit report regularly can keep the damage to a minimum.
If you plan to buy a home or car in the near future it becomes doubly important to know what's in your report because if there are errors it can take time to have them removed.  Federal Law in the US requires that all three of the largest bureaus ( TransUnion, Equifax, Experian) provide consumers with a free copy of their credit report every 12 months. That means that you are entitled by law to get three free reports every year.

 If you do plan to make a large purchase in the future it's a good idea to check all three at the same time. In that way, you are able to see exactly what they contain. It's possible for one bureau to have an error but not the other two and it really pays to be informed. If you just want to keep an eye on your credit you can request a report from a different bureau every four months, in that way you can keep fairly good track of your credit over the year. The best place to order your free credit report is www.annualcreditreport.com. This is the only site that is operated by the three big bureaus. Beware of websites that offer you a free credit report but then ask you to purchase something or ask for your credit card number, remember, the report is free to you by law. You can also get your FICO score at this site although there is a small charge for that.
