As of the end of June, there is a new park to enjoy in the San Jose area, and it is perfect for hikers, bicyclists and equestrians. Coyote Valley Open Space Preserve is now open for visitors. The preserve is located near the Alameden side of the Calero Resevoir at Morgan Hill, just south of San Jose. It consists of 348 acres with four miles of trails, a parking and picnic area and a restroom. The grand opening was held on June 27th by the Santa Clara County Open Space Authority. The preserve is now open year round from 7:00 am to sunset each day.

The Coyote Valley Open Space Preserve is for more than just area residents to enjoy. The park is considered a crucial habitat for the Bay Checkerspot butterfly, an endangered species. It is also an ideal place for other wildlife of the region, including mountain lions, as the area is one of the few remaining undeveloped regions for wildlife and their migration trails situated between the Santa Cruz Mountains, the Diablo Mountain range and Mount Hamilton.

To protect the preserve and the wildlife, there are some rules to keep in mind before you go. No pets are allowed on the preserve at any time and smoking is prohibited, as are fires and fireworks. There are no water fountains within the preserve either so be sure to bring plenty with you. There are designated trails for mountain bikes, hiking and horseback riding, be sure to stick to the proper trails. Arrowhead Trail is split into three levels of hiking abilities. The first stage is an easy hike and known as Hearts Delight. The second is a moderate hike, and if you are up for the challenge, the full loop gives you four miles of trail, taking you up to and along the ridgeline.

The work which was done in prep for the grand opening of the preserve was part of phase one of the Coyote Valley Open Space project. The next phase will including building an outdoor learning center with interpretive signs as well as a paved loop at the bottom of the valley. Until the center is complete you can enjoy the Arrowhead trail on your own with great viewing sites all along the way. Coyote Valley Open Space Preserve is one more wonderful reason San Jose is a great place to live.
