4 Tips and Tricks to Help Families Save Money When Moving

Written by Posted On Wednesday, 11 October 2017 15:51

Relocating a family can be an expensive endeavor, but there are ways to reduce your moving bill. Consider these four tips and tricks to help families save money when moving before looking for your next home.

Declutter Before the Move

Since moving is such a daunting task, it is easy to just pack everything with a promise to sort through and recycle items you will never use again when life calms down. The problem is life never really seems to calm down, so not only do you pay someone to move a lot of stuff that serves no purpose, you eventually worry whether hoarding is hereditary. Make the time to sort and eliminate useless clutter before the move.

Packing Materials on the Cheap

Have you ever thought about all of the items you pack—like blankets, towels, linens, and even clothing—that could be used as packing materials? Not only are they super absorbent, you save space by not packing these items separately. Instead of buying peanuts and bubble wrap, use these items to protect your fragile items. If you know a move is in your future, you can also keep the packing materials for your electronics and repack them in the original boxes. Not only have you already paid for the boxes, the box and the packing materials are usually custom fitted for your electronics. The better the fit, the less chance of damage.

Hire the Right Movers

Not all movers are alike. Before you schedule a move, compare rates and reputations of at least three companies. Make sure to ask whether the price quoted is firm or subject to additional fees. Some companies, such as Walsh Moving & Storage, know that you should avoid hiring a mover over the phone. Since the cost is based off of moving all your belongings, ask the mover to come to your home and go over what needs moved and if there are any anticipated obstacles or additional charges, such as navigating narrow stairs.

Timing Is Everything

While you cannot always wait for the perfect time to move, if you move during the offseason, movers are more willing to negotiate prices or offer discounts, and you will find the mover’s schedule is more flexible. Offseason for movers is between September and May. Typically relocating on a weekday during the middle of the month is the best time to find a good rate.

Moving need not break the budget. By limiting what you move to necessities and planning ahead, you can save money on relocating the family. Make your next move the best move ever.
