The Environmental Value A Turf Can Add to A Home

You may know that a well-groomed and great looking lawn can add value to the property - as much as 15% in some cases - but did you know that it also has environmental benefits?

When lawns are cared for and have time and money invested in them they can transform your property and make it a nice place to live. There are also a multitude of environmental benefits too, which we are going to take a look into today. If your lawn isn’t what it once was, then here are some of those benefits which may convince you to give it a makeover.

Fresh Breath

Lawns can seriously increase the air quality around the home and allow you to take a fresh breathe of high quality oxygen when you are outside. The lawn draws in carbon dioxide which it then photosynthesizes to release high quality oxygen back into the air. A great piece of advice from the lawn specialists Musturf is to leave any grass clippings on the lawn itself, as it is a great way to increase the amount of carbon which the lawn can draw in.

Noise Absorption

Recent studies have revealed that lawns have a great ability to absorb noise pollution, and that is good news for those living in urban areas. Owing to its large area and its density, lawns can help to make your property a quieter place for all this inside of it.

Natural Air Conditioning

Whilst you may not be aware of it, lawns are in fact very good at cooling both its own area and the area which surrounds it. If you have ever stood by the lawn at night after a warm day then you will have no doubt felt this cooler temperature caused by the moisture of the lawn, and this has a big impact on the temperature of your property. It may be tough to quantify, but you can in fact save money and energy usage in the home thanks to the cooling benefits of your lawn.

Risks of Fires

In areas where there are often wildfires, lawns have been shown to have a great impact on the slow of the spread of those fires. Healthy lawns are essentially firebreaks which can seriously protect your property from harm.

Heavy Water

Well cared for turf which has good soil structure below is fantastic when it comes to allowing water drainage. Conversely we know that areas which are hard or indeed areas of earth with poor soil structure, does not allow for absorption and therefore causes issues with runoff after a heavy downpour. Additionally these harder areas make sure that groundwater resources fail to get replenished. In areas which rely on precipitation for drinking water, both of these issues can cause problems. Well-kept lawns are essential for this process and they also reduce problems associated with flooding in urban areas.

When storm drains are overflowing with water it gets pushed back into the streets, eventually the water carries to storms and creeks, at which point carrying with it dirt and contaminated. This can actually lead to the pollution of streams and rivers.

Healthy Soil

It is not just the lawns which help to trap carbon and release oxygen, this happens with plants, trees and flowers too. What a healthy area of turf can do is make sure that the soil remains nutrient rich and with good structure. This in turn ensures that anything planted in the surrounding area will also be able to grow and thrive, which increases its ability to photosynthesize carbon.

Lawns look beautiful, they can add value to the home and they even offer mental health benefits. As you can see, there is also a wide range of environmental reasons to make sure that your lawn is well cared for.
