How to Decorate With Pantone’s Color of the Year, Classic Blue

Written by Jaymi Naciri Posted On Monday, 23 December 2019 05:00

You may love a certain shade of yellow or be dying to paint your whole house black. But beyond how it looks (and how it goes with your stuff if you’re painting the interior of your home), what does the color you choose say about you? A lot, if you ask Pantone.

The world’s foremost color authority, Pantone announces their color of the year every December. This year’s selection is Classic Blue, “A timeless and enduring blue hue” that is “elegant in its simplicity,” said Pantone. “Suggestive of the sky at dusk, the reassuring qualities of the thought-provoking PANTONE 19-4052 Classic Blue highlight our desire for a dependable and stable foundation on which to build as we cross the threshold into a new era.”

Blue can be moody, rich, deep, and dramatic. But this one is serene, even “restful,” bringing “a sense of peace and tranquility to the human spirit, offering refuge.” If that’s something you want in your home—and we know we do!—here are 10 ways to use Classic Blue.

The walls

This chic shade of blue brings a cool feeling to the space. Splash it on the walls of your bedroom to create a cocoon of calm.

The door

Well that sets the tone.

Window treatments

A patterned drape in classic blue frames the windows beautifully.

Bedding

A crinkled crushed velvet comforter set on sale for $135? Yes, please!

Art

Adding a few pieces of art in the color du jour is an easy and inexpensive way to make your home feel more current. Nature-inspired art is one of the top trends right now, according to Elle Décor, so how about this Indigo Forest piece?

Your furniture

Specifically, this couch. Yes, it’s bold. And it’s big. And it totally breaks that “stay neutral when it comes to larger pieces” rule. But, wow, is it pretty.

Kitchen stuff

From the blue Keurig to the unique cookware to the ocean-like finish of the Pottery Barn dinnerware, we’ll be decking out our kitchen in everything blue this year.

Accessories

If you tend to be more attracted to neutrals, weaving in a few small pieces in the shade allows you to dip a toe without going overboard.

Wallpaper

Pick a wall. Any wall. Now, find a great wallpaper in Classic Blue, like Stardust from West Elm, and apply. Instant focal point.

The rug

With blue as a grounding color, you can weave in other complementary shades. Choose an intricate pattern, like this Persian rug, to add another layer of interest to the space.
