Home Trend Alert: Industrial Chic

Industrial chic is a trend with staying power, as what was formerly seen mainly in lofts, where the high ceilings and open ductwork provide a great canvas, has made its way into the mainstream - and into the suburbs - with a variety of pieces that can be woven into existing designs and still make an impact.

"While formerly reserved for the likes of exposed brick lofts and industrial condo spaces, the industrial look has recently made its way into the homes of both urban-dwellers and suburbanites," said Style at Home. "With simple shapes and raw materials like galvanized steel, glass and reclaimed wood, the look can be incorporated into your own home decor."

Added Tidbits and Twine: "The beauty of Industrial is that it's timeless, neutral, simple, and natural."

Here are a few ways to incorporate the design style into your space, no matter where you live, or what your prevailing style is.

Living Space

"Although you may be thinking that this look can only be utilized in a more contemporary or modern space, you can just as easily place a industrial chic side table or lamp within a traditional space for contrast," said Décor and You DC. A reclaimed wood and iron coffee table or bookcase blends seamlessly into a living room while providing visual interest.

Home Office

Want to be re-inspired while working from home? Ditch the boring office setup and bring in a wow piece. Adding a little life to your work environment will make it look better, and might even give you a new boost of creativity.

Bedroom

If you're not lucky enough to have a feature wall of exposed brick, create one! You can find a variety of reclaimed antique materials including brick, pavers, and cobblestones at Historical Bricks.

Or, go with a reclaimed wood look, with a DIY or purchased headboard.

Lighting

"Typically, lighting and hardware provide the industrial while furniture, wall paint, and accessories bring the chic," said Progress Lighting. "Investing in industrial fixtures is a safe bet as their classic designs are always in style, no matter what is trending in home décor."

Because the trend is hot, a variety of styles are available in every price point.

Kitchen

Lighting in a kitchen offers a great opportunity to make a statement, and can be changed out to accommodate new trends. Another easy choice for incorporating the industrial chic trend into the kitchen is in seating. On-trend counter and barstools bring stylish function to the space.
