6 Ways To Get A Fun, Funky, Fancy Kitchen

Sedate white kitchens everywhere you look getting you down? You're in luck. Kitchen trends for the year are going decidedly non-white. They're actually getting a little festive.

This is the year "to give your kitchen a bold upgrade," said Freshome. "This means not being afraid to add a little color to your décor where you might not have expected it before. Sometimes it takes the creation of contrast to get the aesthetic look you're aiming for- and bold colors are ‘it' in 2015."

Colorful Cabinets

Vibrant shades like red, turquoise, and yellow are showing up on cabinets in place of last years' white, grey, and muted blue. "These bodacious colors naturally draw the eye in and create a focal point," said Freshome.

If Not Bright, How About Black?

"The trend in the last decade has been to turn towards white for a soothing, elegant and neutral kitchen backdrop," said Decoist. But over the past few years, the color spectrum has slowly started moving towards the other end…with black becoming the sought-after shade in the kitchen. Black brings an air of sophistication to the kitchen and gives it a sleek, bold aura."

Fanciful Walls

It's been trending in other areas of the home for the past few years, and now wallpaper is making its way to the kitchen.

"Want to add interest and character to your cooking zone? Incorporating wallpaper—which will be a major trend in 2015," said Houzz. "Wallpaper provides an easy way to add visual impact, even in small amounts (and) gives you the control of complementing the architectural elements throughout the kitchen or adding a beautiful contrast to an otherwise simple color palette."

Industrial Touches

The industrial/rustic industrial trend continues, and is now moving into the kitchen, bringing impactful pieces into the forefront. Lighting is an easy way to embrace the trend. But for a big punch, bring in an industrial-style island.

Heavy Metal

Metal mania continues, only now it's bringing with it a retro feel. Are you ready to say hello (again!) to brass?

"Sometimes the best décor trends are seen in the details. Your kitchen is no exception to this rule," said Freshome. "The gleam of brass details can turn your kitchen into a very elegant space. Think shiny brass pendants, brass knobs, handles and brass facets."

If brass doesn't do it for you, try copper for a warm feel without the brashness. "For the kitchen, think of faucets and fixtures in bright golden hues to bring a dash of luxury without going over the top," said Decoist.

A lively backsplash

Stepping away from subway tiles, backsplashes are getting new shapes to bring impact to this key area of the kitchen.

"From Moroccan mosaic to brushed herringbone tile, the patterned look is big for backsplashes in 2015," said style at home. "These patterned backsplashes add texture and interest to the kitchen—they're a refreshing change from the marble slabs and subway tiles we've been seeing for years."
