Making the Most of a Small Space

Written by Posted On Friday, 30 December 2016 07:09

Moving into a small home can be a challenge, especially if you’re downsizing from a larger place or have accumulated a lot of furniture and possessions over the years. Fortunately, by following just a few simple tips, you can make the most of whatever space you have.

First and foremost, you should go through all of your things and sell or donate any furniture, decorative objects, clothing and other items that aren’t essential or haven't been used in years.

Next, be sure to use any storage space effectively – bookcases and shelves serve many functions, saving space while displaying books and accent pieces. Baskets and bins also serve double-duty, offering both decoration and storage. And consider having built-in shelving installed, a relatively inexpensive way to provide extra storage and avoid clutter.

It’s also smart to take advantage of wall and ceiling space. Mount your television on the wall, rather than using a bulky entertainment center. In the kitchen, use pot racks and hanging vegetable baskets to free up cabinet and pantry space. Spice racks, storage jars and utensil holders are other ways to help keep kitchen tools organized and counters clear.

Seasonal clothing, decorations or keepsakes can be stashed in bags or bins under beds, in the attic or on the top shelves of closets. Shoe racks and organizing cabinets can help you store more items within a smaller footprint.
