Choose an Umbrella for the House or the Patio

Written by Posted On Tuesday, 14 November 2017 23:56

If the sun squeezes, the umbrella becomes a great ally in terraces, patios and gardens. But if you're tired of buying umbrellas that do not last, check out the features that your next purchase should have.

The size of the umbrella

The sunshades are getting bigger and they allow shade in ever wider spaces. Look, if not, in the huge parasols that have on the terraces of many bars and cafes.   Ideally, as far as possible, cover the table and also about   60 cm on each side. Or what is the same, if the table is 1.2 meters, then the most appropriate umbrella must be 2.4 meters in diameter (or the standard measure closest to this magnitude). The diameter of the mast can also give an idea of its resistance: models with a mast around   38-48 mm in diameter are recommended, although there are also 18 mm and up to 60 mm.

The height of the umbrella

Beach umbrellas are usually adjustable in height, but not those that are designed for patio and garden. Most are 2.5 meters high, but 2.1 meters can also be considered adequate. The idea is to buy an umbrella that can be tilted to one side to get out of the sun during its daily journey.

Table umbrellas and eccentric umbrellas

Table umbrellas are those that are introduced through a hole made in the surface, so that the table itself holds them in place. They are the most economical model, so when you have to change them, it does not "hurt" your pocket ... You can also remove them from this location, and stand on one foot independently to give them other uses besides shading the garden table. But they have some drawbacks: they are always there in the middle and there is no possibility of tilting them.

The eccentric umbrellas, however, are ideal for shading without interrupting a conversation at the table or disturbing to pass the dishes, etc. To do this, the mast, which is located on one side, supports another bar that takes the parasol from above. These umbrellas do come with a built-in foot that keeps them fixed on the ground and prevents them from falling sideways or flying away in the wind. If the umbrella is 3 meters or more in diameter, then it is important to   choose one with a fairly large foot and with enough weight.

The material of the umbrella

You have to be attentive to the material with which the structure of the umbrella is made, but also to the type of fabric. Umbrellas can be made of wood, aluminum, steel or fiberglass. This last material is very interesting if you live in windy areas, since it is flexible and does not break with the force of the wind. As for aluminum, it is highly prized as umbrella material because of its lightness and because it does not rust.

The fabric should be resistant to both wind and water, and provide good sun protection. It is also important that it is as resistant as possible to the weather, and especially to the discoloration produced by the sun's rays. But keep in mind that in the most basic models it is practically impossible to choose the type of fabric. The best fabrics for patio umbrellas are dyed acrylic fibers. It is also important that the tissues are treated with some anti-stain and water repellent treatment (such as tents). Quality umbrellas can be guaranteed for 5 years.

Special parasols

A few years ago, it became fashionable to use the old umbrellas of the children's trolleys to create a miniature sunshade on the beach chairs. The idea was great, because the sunshades of the baby strollers have a flexible structure ... Well, there are umbrellas that have that same spring mechanism right at the top of the mast, and are ideal for use in areas of much wind.

Sunshade feet

The feet are as important a part of the umbrella as they are, although they are often sold separately. Three criteria must be taken into account when choosing the most suitable one for our umbrella: the aesthetics, the mast diameter it is capable of accommodating and the weight of the foot itself. There are from 16 kg to 55 kg, the heaviest being the most resistant to the wind. As for the materials, there are, for example, feet of iron, cement coated with resin for a look of forge, lightweight concrete, concrete covered with resin, cement ... And also, basic feet, made of plastic to fill with water or sand. The market offers a variety of colors and shapes so that everyone can choose the one that best suits their tastes.

Maintenance of the umbrella

When it is not used, the ideal is to cover the umbrella with a cover, especially in the long seasons when it is not in use. To clean the fabric, you can remove the dirt that is not adhered with a brush and then wash with a solution of 4 liters of warm water with 0 ml of mild soap. The solution is applied with a soft brush, and finally it is rinsed, allowing the fabric to dry in the open air.
