Is Summer the Best Time to Rent a New Apartment

Written by Posted On Tuesday, 13 August 2019 04:06

People move into new apartments year-round, but some seasons may be better than others for renting. Studies have shown that timing your apartment search can save renters tons of money, but during which season? Between May and September tend to be the busiest months for moving, but does that mean summer is the best time to rent a new apartment?

Since there tends to be lower demand for new apartments during the winter months, you may find that landlords are more negotiable regarding terms and cost of renting a new apartment. They just want to move old inventory and get them rented, since an empty unit isn’t making them any money. This is where winter discounts may come into play, saving you money on your move. Rental prices tend to be lower from December to March, but there may be less availability since people don’t want to move during the colder months. The hassle of moving during the colder months may deter people from wanting to move until warmer weather hits. If you are in a current lease agreement, breaking the lease to move onto a winter lease schedule may not be worth it, depending on how much it will cost in the end. You’ll have to determine the cost to break your lease and how much money you’d be saving by making the move in winter before coming to a decision. Take into consideration the possibility of extreme weather for states that have harsh winters and it may start to seem like summer really is the best time to rent a new apartment.

During the summer months, there tends to be more options available for renting, but the prices are also significantly higher. If you move during the summer months, you can expect to pay hundreds more throughout a year of renting than you would if you were to rent in a different season. If price isn’t a concern, renting in summer may be your best bet since it opens new units, with many people choosing to move during the summer season. Many life changing events also happen during summer months, such as high school graduates going on to college or college students moving closer to where they will have a career. Summer months are the busiest for moving since the weather is nice, meaning previously rented units will open when old tenants move out. The demand is high during the summer months though, so you’ll want to be quick on your search if you want to secure a good apartment!

The best season for renting a new apartment largely depends on your needs. If you’re looking to save money, it is best to rent during the winter. However, there are less options available during the colder months. If you want more options available and you’re not concerned about price, summer is the best time to move. Rent prices tend to be higher in the summer months, but there will be more supply of apartments since it’s a hot time for moving.
