Coronavirus: Is This the Start of the Great Montana Land Rush?

Written by Posted On Wednesday, 25 March 2020 10:41

I’m sure the locals do not want to hear this!

I believe that one of the major repercussions of this Coronavirus pandemic is going to be a mass flight to some of the underpopulated states. Montana fits that bill!

Montana is the 4th largest state in the nation and the 42nd state in population. If you take a look at the other states in the bottom 10 of population, Montana is by far the most beautiful. The only state that might be able to make an argument is Maine, but who wants to live on the east coast??

This pandemic is making people rethink how they want to live and raise a family. During this time of social distancing, people in Montana can take advantage of 1000’s of miles of trails in a state with only 7 people per square mile. Arguably, Montana is home to the 2 best National Parks in the country. Glacier Park alone has over 700 miles of trails.

Coronavirus is also expediting the work from home trend. Working remotely will now be the norm, not the exception. Who is going to want to be cooped up in a house or apartment in a big city after all of this? The infrastructure and technology in Montana have been growing and this crisis is only going to speed up the growth.

One of the other trends that I have noticed in the past week is the sudden interest in “off-the-grid” properties. Montana has always been home to a lot of people who want to get away from the crowds. Ever since I have been in the real estate business, there have always been “off-the-grid” listings. Occasionally they would generate interest, now they are the hot properties. Just this week alone, we have had 3 calls on these types of properties. At the time of writing this article, there are 31 “off-the-grid” properties for sale around NW Montana alone.

Montana is also set up for people that need to travel for their work. There are 5 International Airports located around the state. Billings, Missoula, Bozeman, Great Falls, and Kalispell. People here are able to live remotely but have access to the world. Flights were being added to all of these airports before Coronavirus, I’m sure this will just add to the number of flights.

Montana is also home to some of the best health care in the country. A recent article listed Montana as the state with the best doctors in the country for the treatment of Coronavirus. Many great Doctors have moved to Montana long before this pandemic in order to enjoy the lifestyle. I’m guessing many more will be coming after this!

One can only speculate as to the final result of this pandemic. But if you look at this logically, Montana is set up to see major growth as a result.
