Be Very Careful When Using Mobile Scanner Software

Written by Posted On Thursday, 03 October 2019 05:25

I’m not sure how many of you have heard about the malicious Android scanner app which had more than 100 million downloads from Google Play.  We always expect Google Play and Apple’s App Store to be safe from malware, but they can’t be 100% safe with the numbers of apps being built daily and the number of updates pushed to those apps.

We are in the middle of a 7-part series about Apple Notes and Google Keep, and the next subject I want to discuss is about scanning documents.  Both Notes and Keep have scanning capabilities which have been around for years and, I feel, are safe from malicious malware. Let me be slightly a geek; OCR (optical character recognition), which you see now and then, is the software that enables scanning.  OCR is available to you for FREE with both Notes and Keep. Yes, some of the OCR apps offered have more bells and whistles than Notes and Keep, but think about what you are scanning – do you want it shared on the dark web? I personally use my home printer and scanner for 95% of my scanning needs, but now and then I am out and about and need to call on my mobile device to be my scanner.

Starting with Apple Notes mobile just 2 steps:

In the first article of my 7-part series, “Digital Note-Taking for REALTORS®,” I discuss "Grabbing Text from an Image using Google Keep”.  You can move your note from Keep to Google Docs and download with options including PDF:

I want to make a few points about malicious apps – even apps from an official store, one with a good reputation, one with millions of positive reviews and a big, loyal user base – can turn into malware overnight.  One update can change the app to the dark side. That is what happened with the Android app that brought me to write this article. Over 100 million people downloaded this safe app and used it until somehow a Trojan Dropper malware was added to an update.  Nothing is completely safe when it comes to technology; the same concerns we have in terms of viruses on our computers we should also have for all of our mobile devices.

This is #5 of 7 tips to improve your Information Management.  If you implement some or all of these tips it will help you be more organized.  When I started speaking many years ago my slogan was “Work Smarter Not Harder with Smartphones.”  When looking at what technology to use, remember that Contact, Time and Information Management are the core of what needs to be accomplished.  If I can save you a few minutes here and there at the end of the week you have found more time to spend how you like by working smarter!
