Have you written you July 4th article yet?

Many real estate agents find it helpful to write about local events. After all, it shows that you are the local expert.  Writing these sorts of articles for my flooring business really wasn't that relevant, but every year, just for fun, I would write about the July 4th fireworks in my county.  I typically wrote them on ActiveRain, just to see how they would do. I figured that it was a specific and condensed search, so I could try it and see how it did.

Well, much to my surprise, the first year it did great. I got close to 10,000 clicks, with most of them occuring between July 2nd and July 4th.  The next year, I wanted to beat my record, and I did with around 12,500 clicks.  And, the following year even better....over 25,000 clicks.  Now in all fairness, we had some rain, so I kept updating the article with rain dates and many people kept checking, and I got clicks for an extra day.  But, anyway, it a relatively easy way to get some bonus local traffic.

I recently also wrote an article for  4th of July fireworks on Long Island for one of one of my clients, too.  We'll see how both of these do this year. I'm curious to find out.

Anyway, here's some advice:

  • - Write your article early (I made this mistake this year...previously, I had written it beg of June and one year on May 31st).  This year, I delayed, so we'll see if I'm I can overcome this.
  • - Gather as much info as you can online.  Make sure it's accurate and IMPORTANTLY FOR THIS YEAR.  (You'd be surprised how much old/dated info comes up on these searches.  Check days of the week to make sure it matches this year.
  • - Include the year in your title.  This will tell both people and google that your article is current.
  • - Try to rewrite the info/don't copy and paste it.  Besides the plagiarism issue (which I avoid like the plague), your article won't rank if it's the same as all the others.
  • - Get as much info as you can now, but also periodically updated it w/ added info.  This will show the search engines that your article is current and up to date.
  • - Use pictures (again, don't copy or steal).  Make sure you have the right to use those photos.  And, use alt tags using your key words/town/county, etc.  Mix up the words (e.g. July 4th Fireworks in Westchester County, Fourth of July Fireworks in Westchester NY, etc.
  • - Bonus create some unique graphics that have text overlays. You can use fireworks in the background and the post title in the foreground.  I use Canva.com (free version) for this.  (see the feature image on here as an example).
  • - Share on social media
  • - Ideally backlink to your article for more authority (just like I did here).
  • - Include a google map with your location

I hope this is helpful.
