Pleasant Plains is a community located on Staten Island, one of the five boroughs of New York City.  It occupies approximately 1.26 square miles. It is surrounded by Woodrow to the north, the Lower New York Bay to the south, Richmond Valley to the west, and Prince's Bay to the east.

The neighborhood was named by the officials of the Staten Island Railroad Corporation, now known as the MTA Staten Island Railway. In 1860, the railroad was extended to Tottenville and a station crossing Amboy Road was named Pleasant Plains. The name was eventually applied to the community which sprung up around the station.

 

The community of Pleasant Plains features wetlands and natural parkland.

There are also a considerable amount of residential homes. While the town features older houses, some new developments have taken place over the past ten years.

In summer, the average temperature is 74.5°F, while the average winter temperature is 29.6°F.

Transportation in Pleasant Plains

The neighborhood of Pleasant Plains is served by the Staten Island Railway station of the same name near Amboy Road/Bloomingdale Road.

Aside from the trains station, there are other ways to get around in Pleasant Plain. There are a few local buses which serve the community. Pleasant Plains is served by the S55 bus on Amboy Road and Bloomingdale Road. The X17 and X22 serve Amboy Road and Bloomingdale Road, while the X22A serves Amboy Road and Drumgoole Road. In addition, numerous express buses also serve the area to and from Manhattan.

Education in Pleasant Plains

There are several excellent schools for your children to attend in and around the neighborhood of Pleasant Plains. The nearest public schools, operated by the New York City Department of Education, include P.S. 3, at 80 South Goff Avenue; P.S. 6, at 555 Page Avenue; I.S. 34, at 528 Academy Avenue; and Tottenville High School, at 100 Luten Avenue.

Private schools nearby include Gateway Academy, at 200 Boscombe Avenue, and Yeshiva of Staten Island, at 1870 Drumgoole Road East.

Pleasant Plains is also home to the main campus of South Richmond High School, a special education school.

With top-notch schools, plenty of parklands, and vacant land in Pleasant Plains, it is no wonder residents here enjoy a great quality of life!

Shopping in Pleasant Plains

There are several choices for shopping in the area. You can visit Amboy Plaza, the town’s own shopping center located near the Pleasant Plains train station.  You can also visit the nearby Bricktown Shopping Centre in Charleston. It has a Target, Home Depot, and a few other stores, and dining options.
