When trying to find out which Oakland County MI lakes are the biggest or largest it can be trying. Many different websites give different sizes for some of the same lakes. The size of the major public ones are easy to find out by researching maps from Michigan's Department of Natural Resources. But the smaller ones that are non public sometimes there are two or three different sizes based on the website or book that you look at. It may be windy on one side of a lake with choppy waters, so you can go to the other side of the lake to find calmer water to waterski on. If you do not know here in Michigan we define lakes that you can do water sports on, and that allow all sorts of motor boats and jet skis on as "all sports lakes". You can tube, have a speed boat, jet ski, or tow somebody behind the boat on an all sports lake in Michigan.
One of the first questions I ask my buyers is what they want to do on the lake when they find a lake home. This allows me to help them find a lake in Southeastern Michigan that fits their needs. The second question is about the type of boat or boats that they are goint to get. Knowing that helps in the equation too. Some lake home buyers never buy a boat. They are happy with just looking at the water. To me that sounds foreign but I live on White Lake in White Lake Township. I know and see lake home owners that have no boat. They may not be able to afford one, or got tired of taking care on one, or have no desire to go out on the lake. One of my clients once said that her mother could tell when she was calling from the lake house because she sounded so much calmer. She just lover the view of the water.
So knowing whether you want to sail, kayak, or just fish may determine the type of lake you are on. If you get bored going around in a circle then a small or round lake may not be for you. You may want a larger lake or a lake with lots of bays, canals, or islands to go around.
