Relocation Budget: 4 Essentials Every Family Should Account for When Moving

Written by Posted On Thursday, 05 October 2017 19:40

Moving is a huge step, whether you're moving for a new job, a fresh start, or better living conditions for you and your family. Unfortunately, it can also be expensive. Moving is stressful enough without having to worry about money. How do you prepare for the cost of moving without pulling your hair out? Start putting money into a relocation budget. The last thing you need is to unprepared when starting over.

There are so many different things to account for in your moving budget. Even tasks such as packing or choosing a moving date can affect your bottom line. So, what are the essentials to account for when moving a family?

Moving Insurance

If you are considering using a moving company, one major factor you need to consider is mover's insurance. Whether you're moving around the corner or across the country, you want to make sure that your favorite furniture items are covered, just in case they break during the moving process. There are two types of moving insurance to expect. The moving company may offer insurance with an affiliated company. This option is usually less expensive. However, most moving companies don't offer insurance just to protect buyers from scams.

The alternative and better option is a third-party insurance company. Some of these companies will offer full replacement value on damaged items and give you a peace of mind. These services can range from around $500 up to $3000, depending on how much coverage you will need

Self-Storage Units

When moving, you may have to rent a self-storage unit temporarily as you relocate. You may not have enough space to accommodate all of your furniture in your new home, you may have to move quickly so you have to empty the house in a hurry, or you simply just don't know how to incorporate your furniture in your new space yet. Some companies, like Redondo Van & Storage, know that renting a storage unit can be helpful when you need one. After all, everyone wants a place for all their stuff so it can stay safe and sound.

Hiring Movers VS DIY Moves

When moving, you have to ask yourself if you want to hire movers or would you rather just do it yourself. The American Moving and Storage Association estimates that the average cost of moving out of state is around $4300 and in-state moving costs are around $Most of this will depend on how many movers will be required for your relocation. On average, it will be $25 every hour per mover. In contrast, if you get a U-Haul, it can cost somewhere between $30-50 dollars to rent plus somewhere between $.50-$.90 per mile. Plus you have to consider all of the moving material that will be needed, such as packaging materials.

Another expense people forget is the cost of cleaning your old home. This process is time consuming so most movers decide to hire a professional moving company. Hiring a company to do deep-cleaning can cost you around $150 for a 2000 square ft. house.
