Delightful, Dazzling, and Dignified In Big D: What You Get For $100 Million

The most expensive home in the country, Walnut Place, an architecturally distinct and gloriously pampered private estate in exclusive Dallas' Preston Hollow, is now listed for $100 million. It's still a whopper of an asking price, but if you want to live on the largest single-family residential property in central Dallas among the hallowed grounds of the city's elite (President George W. Bush, H. Ross Perot, T. Boone Pickens, Mark Cuban, Roger Staubach, Mike Modano) is the Manhattan-like $2,799/square foot price really too much to pay?

Truth is, the 10 bedrooms, 12 full- and five half-baths, and 28,000 square feet (of just the main house!) of magazine-worthy everything in one of DFW's most coveted locations had us at the twisty wrought iron front gates. They're just the first opulent sighting in a home overflowing with them.

Seriously, we know the "D" in Big "D" stands for Dallas, but in the context of this $100 million stunner, a few more words come to mind.

How about Desirable: That's an understatement. Even in this premier pocket of high-end real estate, a piece of land upon which sits a home of this caliber are rare.

Dignitaries: That's who was said to have been entertained in the home by Pio Crespi, the Italian Count who first commissioned and christened the home while overseeing his family's cotton empire.

Dizzying: To think that 25 acres of magnificently sited land could exist in the heart of Dallas definitely makes the head spin. The land itself is said to be valued at nearly $2 million per acre. Grounds feature an expansive covered outdoor living area; lighted tennis and basketball courts; an Olympic-sized swimming pool; several greenhouses, lush landscaping including rose and vegetable gardens, magnolia trees, and rolling lawns; and a year-round stream.

Dazzling: As elegantly designed as the home is, an equal effort was made to create amazing play spaces. An immense game room anchored by a massive carved stone fireplace is joined by a state-of-the-art private theatre with seating for 19 and a concession stand, plus its own sports bar.

Dapper: Perhaps never before has a library been so handsome than this one featuring 1820s French paneling and a design by architect Peter Marino.

Deliberate: The property last changed hands in 1997, at which time the new owners embarked on a purposeful, comprehensive, three-year, multi-million-dollar restoration and expansion. Adjacent properties were also purchased to increase the original 12 acres to 25.

Dynamic: Beyond the plush interiors and lush grounds, the property also features state-of-the-art technology with acoustic ceilings, Lutron lighting inside and out, integrated audio speakers throughout, and a CCTV security system.

Deco: As in art deco. That's what you'll find in the incredible bar room, with its exquisite silver leafing.

Dignified: Some of the world's finest artists and artisans, including esteemed Dallas builder John Sebastian, noted New York architect Peter Marino and London landscape architect Arabella Lennox-Boyd, came together to renovate and re-imagine the property, complementing the original work of world-renowned architect Maurice Fatio.

Delicious: We could set up camp and be quite happy just living in that kitchen. The design includes high-end French amenities including 17th Century Delft Manganese tiles, custom glass, antique terracotta tile floors, and a 10-foot-long LaCorneu range.

Dome: Every home needs a conservatory, especially one featuring two fireplaces, radiant heated floors below, and an incredible dome to top it off.

Details: Old world elegance, masterful craftsmanship, and incomparable materials are everywhere you look, with a limestone exterior, Honduran Mahogany, bookend marble, original polished marble floors, and ebony-stained oak flooring.

Delightful: How else can you describe a master retreat that is larger than most homes. The 3,000-square-foot suite boasts his-and-her baths, expansive closets, and a private terrace overlooking the grounds.

The property also features: an additional three bedroom home; a three-story guesthouse; an immense home office; a fully equipped gym with a sauna, steam room and massage room; a basement level with walk-in safe and freezer, a felt-lined silver room, and extensive storage; a full-service commercial stainless steel kitchen, and a separate service wing with two apartments.
