So many potential lake home buyers in Southeastern Michigan as me the question "What are some of the best all sports lakes in Livingston County Michigan?" That is a very hard question to answer. Here are a few of them, they are best in my mind because they are good sized and have more to offer than just the individual lake. Let's talk about a couple of the most popular all sports lakes in Southe Eastern Michigan . I have done two short videos on Zukey Lake waterfront properties near Hamburg and Lake Chemung homes in Howell Michigan. Every lake in Livingston County is a little different. What one buyer likes about a lake the next buyer may dislike. Both of these all sports lakes are big enough to enjoy any type of water sports that you want though I believe, you may use other lakes on the chain of Lakes before you would use Zukey Lake for skiing.. I myself like to water ski and knee-board. Love to take the kids out tubing too. I have never taken the time to learn how to wake-board, but I have tried to barefoot water-ski once. You can do all of these water activities on these beautiful lakes in Livingston County.
Let's talk a little bit about Zukey Lake first. Zukey Lake in Hamburg is a public all sports lake that is about 155 acres in size. The deepest spot is about 35 deep. The lake is part of the Portage Chain of Lakes in Livingston County. The Portage chain of 9 Lakes are:
- Baseline Lake - Pinckney Chain of Lakes - - 254 Acres with a Depth of 57 Feet
- Devils Basin - N/A Acres with a Depth of 20 Feet
- Gallagher Lake near Hamburg - 76 Acres with a Depth of 30 Feet
- Loon Lake - 76 Acres with a Depth of 25 Feet
- Portage Lake Livingston Countyr MI - 754 Acres with a Depth of 84 Feet
- Strawberry Lake Hamburg - 257 Acres with a Depth of 50 Feet
- Tamarack Lake - Portage Chain of Lakes- 16 Acres with a Depth of 34 Feet
- Whitewood Lake - 65 Acres with a Depth of 50 Feet
- Zukey Lake - 115 Acres with a Depth of 35 Feet
What is one of the best features of Zukey Lake in Hamburg is it being part of the Portage chain of Lakes in Livingston County. 9 different lakes that you can get to via boat. So many hours of fun going from lake to lake. Bored of fishing on one lake just go to the next. There are only a few chains of lakes in southeastern Michigan. If you can get on one I highly recommend it.
Zukey Lake is really a public lake because there is a DNR access point on Portage Lake and can get on at Portage Lake and be on Zukey Lake in a short time. It is not a huge lake and you have to be careful of the sand bars and shallow areas. You are probably going to do your water sports activities on Strawberry Lake or Portage Lake if you are looking for room. Another great feature of the lake is the Zukey Lake Tavern. It has good food, and cool drinks. It draws people from on the lakes and off the lakes.
The second all sports lake in Livingston County we are going to talk about is Lake Chemung in Howell. It too is a public all sports lake that is more of a long narrow lake. The size of Lake Chemung is 300 acres and has a deep spot of 70 feet. It has a public access point on the North side of the lake opposite of the Grand River side. I believe it is a glacial carved lake because of the deep spot in the lake. I would not call Lake Chemung a high end lake. You are going to find average size lakefront homes and no mega mansions or luxury lakefront estates. You will still see many small 700 to 900 square foot lakefront cottages on the lake. Some of them have been transformed to year round use.
Of course like all our local lakes you will find bigger homes up to about 2500 square foot in size. Some are newer homes and others are remodeled homes. Homes that may have been cottages that have been added onto. What I really like about this lake is: It's halfway between Howell and Brighton. There are lots of shopping, restaurants, and conveniences of a major city nearby. So you have the fun of the lake with all the normal places of a suburban city like Livonia nearby. You have the best of both worlds.
