Did you know that moving from one home to another is considered one of life’s most stressful events? Of course, the end result is nothing short of wonderful – living in the new home of your dreams. Being prepared is your best protection against difficulties and stress. Here are a few pitfalls to avoid on moving day:

1.  Don’t wait until the last minute to organize your belongings. Moving is the perfect opportunity to clean house and get rid of any items you no longer use that are taking up space. Divide your belongings into categories: keep, recycle, toss, and donate. You’ll thank yourself once you reach your new home and begin to unpack.
   
   
2.  Don’t move it all yourself. Sure, it can be tempting to save some money by moving all your own belongings, but even if you want to move some of the small stuff yourself, leave the heavy lifting to the professionals. You’re less likely to damage your possessions – or your back!
   
   
3. Don’t go with your first quote. Get as many estimates as you can and choose a mover who not only appeals to your pocketbook, but also exudes a sense of integrity. After all, you are entrusting your moving company with your most precious possessions. Be sure to advise them of any items that might need special handling, such as a grandfather clock or grand piano. And make sure you get that estimate in writing.
   
   
4. Don’t wait until the last minute. As soon as you know you are moving, book your movers. Just as in any other industry, some times of the year can be busier than others.
   
   
5. Don’t send everything with your movers. Decide which of your valuables you should carry along with you. Important documents, jewelry, and items of irreplaceable sentimental value shouldn’t be entrusted to a mover – no matter how reputable. Long before moving day, you should start making a list of items that you intend to keep within your reach.
   
   
6. Don’t forget your plants and pets. If you’re crossing state lines, there may be some restrictions. You’ll want all of your pets’ documents, including vaccinations. Before you leave, check to make sure whether your destination state allows you to transport plants by car.
   
   
7. Don’t forget to go over your inventory list on moving day. Make sure the movers haven’t omitted anything from the list. When the last items are on the truck, do a walk-through and peer into every closet, the basement, garage, attic, and even the yard to make sure that nothing is being left behind. Once that truck pulls away, it will be much more difficult to pack up any forgotten items.

When moving day comes, you’ll have a much more relaxing experience if you’re as prepared as you can be. Even if you hit a few snags, your preparation will make the difference between feeling frazzled and having a sense of control.
