Why you need an electrician to install your Wi-Fi network

Written by Posted On Monday, 06 August 2018 19:08

Most homes and people rely heavily on the internet. Streaming music, TV shows, and films, SMART technology, running a home business, working from home, or just watching cat videos. Whatever the reason, most people would now be lost without it. That’s why installing a WI-FI network in your home needs to be done properly and safely.

Most new houses will have cabling set up to support the growing needs of our technologies. However, you may live in an older house, be renovating, or just need to update what you have. When this need arises it’s important to understand what’s involved. Many people believe that they can set themselves up, that they don’t need an electrician to do the job. It’s important to consult a professional though, especially if you are looking at cabling, re-wiring, or need to improve the signal quality you already have.

In this article, we look at problems which may occur when you don’t enlist the professionals in the initial set up.

Strangers accessing your WIFI

If you already have WIFI set up but its been done badly, this can cause huge problems. The main one could be how secure it is. If the connection you have hasn’t been made secure, anyone could be sitting outside your house, or in your street and using your bandwidth to download their favourite shows. An electrician can prevent this from happening by making sure your WIFI is set up properly and securely.

Painfully slow connection speed

If you already have cabling set up, you may think it’s easy to install your wireless router and go. In theory, it is however, you may find that your connection is so slow you have time to make a cheese toastie whilst you wait for sites to load. This is great if you’re hungry but there are only so many cheese toasties one can eat!

There are a number of reasons for a slow connection and just adding a WIFI extender may not fix the problem. Some common causes of WI-FI issues are:

-          Incorrect hardware – if your modem, router, or access points are not sufficient or well suited to your needs then your network will not be able to perform as well as it should.

-          Building structure – Things like multiple floors, walls, and metal pipes can interrupt your WI-FI signal, so network setup needs to account for your building structure.

-          Access point location – Choosing the best location or locations for WI-FI access points can help increase speed and eliminate dead zones in your home or business.

-          Large areas – WI-FI networks that cover large areas need to be carefully planned to maximise the strength of your network while using hardware efficiently.

Increase the cabling to allow for SMART Home installation

As our technological needs grow so may your current network setup. If you’re thinking about adding SMART features to your home or business you may need to increase the network cabling. As with anything to do with wiring or cabling in Australia, this has to be completed by a licensed professional. This is something that you definitely should not attempt to complete yourself. Not only could you put yourself in danger, you could forfeit any insurance cover you have in a disaster.

SMART TVs and IPTV

Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) is the technical name for things such as Netflix and Stan. It’s the delivery of programming by video stream. An electrician can help you to add programming to an already enable Smart TV or extend your TV’s programming abilities. You can also extend it to communicate with other services and bring integrated broadband features and content to your TV screen from providers such as Apple, Amazon, and Google.
