8 Tale Telling Signs Your Air Conditioner Needs To Be Serviced

Here’s a staggering figure. Only 42% of homeowners schedule routine maintenance on their air-conditioning units. It has several repercussions. Firstly, a broken or dirty air conditioner can impact on the health of your family. Secondly, an aircon technician can pick up on problems early on, when they are still easy to repair. Leave it too long, and you could end up with a costly repair or even replacement bill.

If you don't get your AC maintained by a certified technician, you may be experiencing some of the following problems. Look out for these warning signs that you need to call in a pro.

 The airflow isn’t adequate

Your aircon may not be showing any other signs of problems apart from low airflow. It could still even be turning out cold air. However, though it's running, it's likely that the room won't feel as cool as you want it – even when you've set the temperature low. Weak airflow is probably the cause and is usually as a result of a clogged air filter or an issue with the blower. There are other more serious reasons behind weak airflow such as blockages in the air duct, frozen evaporator coils, or even leaking ducts.

It is blowing out warm air

You’ll need to call a technician to look into this, but let’s consider some of the possible causes. Firstly, check the thermostat. Has it been set correctly? It may be that the outside unit isn’t getting any power, that the return duct is disconnected or that the system is low on refrigerant.

 It’s making strange sounds

It’s perfectly normal for your aircon to make a humming noise, but bumping, screeching or grinding sounds could indicate there is an issue. Rattling, for example, could be a sign of a loose part that could be causing further damage to the system. A screeching sound could indicate that the fan belt needs replacing, but other times noises are a sign that the system simply needs oiling. To be safe, get it checked whenever you hear something strange. By prolonging this issue, you can cause costlier breaks.

 There’s an odd odour

When there is a strange smell coming from your HVAC system, it usually means your ducting needs cleaning to remove the build-up of dirt. Another solution is to book an ultraviolet light treatment that eliminates microbial and bacterial growth. Whatever the issue, don’t ignore it. Mould can affect the health of your family. A strange smell can also indicate burnt wire insulation.

 The cycles aren’t consistent

Aircon systems should have a regular routine. They are designed to turn on when the room needs to be cooled and turn off when it reaches the required temperature. In hot weather, the cycles will naturally be more regular. If you think the sequences aren't working, as they should, call in a technician to have a look. It may just need a tune-up.

The unit has moisture around it

It's normal for condensate to settle around your unit. However, if you notice an increase in moisture or a pool of liquid has formed, it could mean your unit is leaking refrigerant. This substance is toxic, so it needs a qualified technician to address the issue. If there is water leaking instead, it could indicate that there is an issue with the drain tube. It could be blocked or broken. Water leaks need to be seen to as they can lead to mould growth.

 The air feels humid

An air conditioner can cool the temperature in a home, but it's also designed to regulate humidity. If it still feels sticky inside your house, the unit may need recalibration. High humidity levels can also lead to mould growth.

Your energy bills are on the rise

There may be no other signs that there is an issue with your aircon. However, a spike in electricity use could be caused by leaky ductwork, a problem with the thermostat, or a range of other problems with your aircon. If it's not working efficiently, it will need more energy to run, so you want to get to the cause of the spike as quickly as you can.

When you call in a technician, they will provide you with a service or repair quote. If your system is very old, they may give the option of replacing it altogether. It's worth looking at if it's not giving you the comfort and temperature control you need, or your energy bills are causing you pain.

A new system can be cheaper to run, so it may be worth investing in one. You won’t have to worry about finding old spare parts if it breaks down either, or future repair bills when you least expect them.
