Making Your House and Vehicles Wheelchair-Accessible

There are times when people get stuck in a wheelchair. What we mean is that they are pretty much reliant on the wheelchair when it comes to moving around. It could be a temporary case or something even permanent. When that happens, everyone will have a hard time and not just the person bound to the wheelchair. The good thing is that you can always make your house and vehicles wheelchair-accessible when you need to.

Making your house wheelchair-accessible

You can pretty much buy a house that is already wheelchair-accessible in the first place. It may not be a part of the description of the house being sold but you can always ask your real estate agent that you’re looking for something like that. Now, if your house from the start isn’t wheelchair-accessible, you can change that. The simple thing that you can do is to have a walkway where there are no stairs. The walkway from the house to the gate can be a straight path and easy for the person on the wheelchair to move around.

If your house has two or more floors, then it can be a good idea to transfer the wheelchair person’s room on the bottom floor. If there is also a bathroom there, then that can be a good thing. However, if you do intend on keeping the floors above, you can have a type of lift created. This lift can help carry the wheelchair person to the upper floors. It wouldn’t cost much and you don’ need to to make the lift look fancy but just keep it working. You can also have a ramp created which allows the person to go up the upper floors easily by wheeling up the straight path.

Having a vehicle that is wheelchair-accessible

There are wheelchair-accessible vehicles that you can buy. These vehicles usually have a folding ramp. This means that the ramp can be tucked away when it doesn’t need to be taken out. The ramp can make the wheelchair person the convenience to enter the vehicle. The ramp can be placed on the side of the vehicle or at the back. Aside from a ramp, there are also those lifts that can be used. Just place the wheelchair on the side or where the lift is and the mechanism will be used to carry the wheelchair up.

If you also have the patience, you can carry the person inside the vehicle and fold the wheelchair which can be tucked in the car easily. You could also just rent a wheelchair transport service. It is something similar to renting a car but in this case, you’re renting a vehicle that is accessible for wheelchairs. Just place your fees and you can rent the vehicle in no time. This is a good idea in case the person is just on the wheelchair for a temporary period of time.

You always have the option to buy or make your house and cars accessible to any person with a wheelchair.
