Should you work for a black cab firm or Uber?

There is a major tax driver shortage in the UK right now. Many taxi drivers ventured into other carers during the pandemic when the demand for cabs was low. Now the UK has reopened, we need taxi drivers to help us get around. You could start your own business as a taxi driver or join a global company like Uber. There are pros and cons to each career path.

What is a Hackney Carriage?

A Hackney Carriage, also known as a black cab, can be hailed from the side of the street. Look for the illuminated ‘TAXI’ sign on top of the vehicle, and wave at the driver. They will pull over and pick you up if they’re available. Black cabs are considered public transport vehicles licensed to ‘ply for hire.’ You can also head to a taxi rank to pick up a taxi.

The driver must hold a hackney carriage driver’s license, and they must have a blue plate on their rear and a smaller version on the windscreen. This will carry the details of their license, vehicle registration and expiry date. The vehicle must pass an MOT before its licensed.

Employment status

Uber has encountered quite a few challenges in the last year. Uber drivers are not self-employed and are entitled to the minimum UK wage, sick pay and holiday pay.

Black cab drivers, on the other hand, are usually self-employed. Self-employment has skyrocketed in the last few years, particularly after the pandemic. We want to determine our wages, holidays, sick leave and much. However, self-employment also comes with its trials and tribulations. There is no one to fall back on if you need a day off. There is no support system. It’s just you, and there is no one to pay for your holiday or sick leave.

Costs and expenses

The initial process of becoming a taxi driver can be expensive – whether you work for a private firm or a big company like Uber. You need to pay for the correct taxi insurance, mileage costs, and vehicle price (if you don’t have one already.) The process can cost thousands for some drivers. Fortunately, uber drivers can claim mileage costs, and private drivers can claim back running expenses.

Salary

In March 2021, Uber finally announced that 70,000 UK drivers would receive the UK minimum wage. They will now be paid £8.72 an hour. However, uber prices can increase by as much as three times the initial fee at peak times. Surge pricing allows drivers to earn more at certain times for the same drive. You might have to deal with traffic jams at rush hour, though.

The local council sets pricing for black cabs. The journey length and region will also determine how expensive the cab is.

Become a taxi driver in 2022 to make some extra cash.
