An old Chinese proverb states, “The best time to plant a tree was twenty years ago, the second best time is now.” Today, with modern nursery production practices, trees are available for planting in nearly every season of the year. They can be successfully planted almost any time, provided they receive the proper follow-up care.
ISA Executive Director Jim Skiera says, “The best time to plant a tree is when you not only have the time to plant the tree, but also the time to provide care to help the tree establish.”
There are seasons of the year when required care is reduced, such as early spring and early autumn when soil and air temperatures are cooler and put less stress on the tree. But some aftercare is always needed, particularly when you plant larger trees and/or when you plant in the heat of summer when regular watering may be required.
