People refer to the trend of millennials moving into popular business hubs as the great urban migration. A reverse sort of commuting is also occurring. The workforce is commuting into suburbs from bustling cities.

Change in Culture

The culture of working towards ultimate success is historically akin to chasing the carrot into metropolitan areas. However, the evolution of millennials sees an uptick in city apartments and commuting to the outer suburbs.

The housing crisis of 2009 put many of the younger generations is a predicament that saw their parents lose suburban homes. The choice to rent inside the hustle of cities sprung from parental struggles.

Companies are evolving in the opposite directionThe vacancies within city limits are growing, and businesses are taking up the empty space. It is to draw the younger generation back into the busy hubs where they live. The live to work lifestyle is shifting into a work to play atmosphere.

Battle of Suburbs and Cities

The suburbs see growth in commerce and consumer goods. Creative companies create a consumer-friendly atmosphere in the suburbs. High-end restaurants, golf courses, and large grocers are making room in the outer edges of cities to redraw people to neighborhood life with quality shops and entertainment.

Top-talent competition is intense both in-city and outLocation, location, location is the primary factor in successfully recruiting the best talent. Unemployment is at historic lows, especially for people with four-year degrees.

A dynamic work culture includes innovation in workplace design and the attraction of working where someone lives are primary for drawing in talent with other, attractive work opportunities.

Companies based in cities are seeing their suburban counterparts expand commuting perks.

  • Free shuttles
  • Vouchers
  • Benefit packages that include WiFi and coffee while shuttling door to door,
  • Worker-friendly support staff

Both sides of the live-to-work lifestyle see continuous changes and livelier offerings.

Something About Social Interactions

Social stimulation is a huge component of happiness. Whether sports’ teams or music scene, following peoples’ interests is often what deciphers where they live.

Belief and interests are central to human interactions. Churches, ethnicity, and interests often are the first consideration when choosing where to live. For instance, a lively music culture brings diverse people together.

Both work and life reflect those choices.

Commute vs Relocating

Trends are one thing while established choices are another. The pros and cons of commuting and living-to-work are people dependent if already living in one or the other.

Things to Consider:

  • The sale of a home reduces debt
  • The closeness of family members
  • Distance from work vs length of commute
  • The preferred school district for children
  • Crime stats
  • Climate preferences
  • Commute time and public transportation
  • Required healthcare facilities

Everyone is different. Factors mean different things. The work migration trends go both ways. It is a matter of individuals and needs.
