3 Things Future You Will Be Happy You Built into Your New House

As you prepare to build your new home, you may have created a mental or written list of everything that the new space needs to have. This list may be itemized based on wants and needs, and it most likely has been created based on your current family life and overall lifestyle. However, you may plan to spend the next several years or even decades in this new home. Therefore, you must plan ahead and anticipate what your future needs may be in order to create a space that can grow with you over the years. These are some of the top features that you may not want to overlook as you design your new home.

Extra Storage Space

Many people accumulate so much stuff that they run out of storage space at home. Even if your home plans include enough storage space for your current needs, you should plan to accumulate many additional items over the years. Ideally, you will have many large closets, extra cabinets in the kitchen, extra space in the garage and more. If you run out of storage space in your new home, you may be forced to get rid of things you want to keep, to rent a storage unit or to build a shed in your backyard.

A Private Owner’s Retreat

If you are building a home for you and your young children, you may be inclined to place the kids’ bedrooms relatively close to the master bedroom. After all, you may want to be near them at night in case they wake up and need you. However, children grow quickly. Soon, they may become very loud in their bedrooms, and the noise level may increase as they become teenagers. They may have numerous sleepovers, want to play loud video games until late at night and more. You will be much happier in your home if you tell new home builders to place a private owner’s retreat on the other side of the home as the kids’ rooms or even on a separate floor.

A Home Office

If you and your spouse do not currently work out of the house, building a home office may seem like a waste of space. However, your work life may change dramatically in a short period of time, and you may eventually need to work out of your home for at least a few hours a week. A home office may also be used by the kids to study, as a quiet reading room when the rest of the family is watching a loud movie and more. If you place a pullout sofa bed in the office, the room can even double as a guest room.

Designing the perfect family home requires ample thought and planning. A skilled new home builder will help you to think through your current and projected future needs so that you create a home that you can feel comfortable in for many years.
