3 Vital Parts of Your Home Renovation to Plan around the Weather

After you have finalized your plans to renovate your home, you may be eager to complete the work and to enjoy the end result of a beautifully renovated space. Many aspects of a typical home improvement or new addition project may be completed at any time of year regardless of weather conditions. However, some renovation projects may require specific weather conditions in order to be completed safely and without damaging the home. As you prepare for your upcoming project, understand how these aspects of your project may need to be completed only in good weather conditions.

Pouring Concrete

Concrete may need to be poured outdoors if you are expanding your patio, adding a walkway or even adding a new wing onto your home. Concrete ideally will be poured in warm and dry weather conditions in order for it to set properly. While it can be poured in cold weather, it may take longer to set. It should not be poured when rain is expected as its integrity may be negatively impacted. Keep in mind that it can take several days for thick concrete to set, and weather conditions should remain ideal throughout this period of time for the best results.

Working on the Roof

Roof work can be dangerous in wet and windy weather conditions. Because of the risks associated with slipping and falling, roofing contractors may not work when these conditions are present. In addition, major roofing work may leave your home’s interior exposed for a period of time. It is not usually a good idea to complete major roofing projects when any type of moisture is present. The last thing you want is to install metal roofing, for example, only to find later that it has been compromised because of a wet installation.

Replacing Doors and Windows

Many renovation projects include the replacement of at least a few windows or exterior doors. These features may be replaced in cold weather conditions, but keep in mind that it may take several hours to install these features in some cases. During this period of time, cold air may gush in through the opening. Doors may be replaced when it is raining as long as they are in a covered area, such as when replacing a front door in a home with a covered porch. Replacing windows in a rainstorm is generally not a good idea.

These are only some of the many projects in a home renovation that may need to be delayed until weather conditions improve. If your renovation plans include these or other weather-dependent projects, understand the potential for a delay in your timeline.
