Smart Home: Cool Things You Can Automate around Your House

Home automation is changing the way people live, and new innovations in this area are being revealed at a rapid pace. The most common and well-known type of home automation is a programmable thermostat, but today’s home automation features are much more advanced than this. These are some of the home automation technologies available today that you may not yet be aware of and that may be practical in your home.

Blinds and Shutters

Opening and closing the blinds and roller shutters no longer requires manual operation. These features can be connected to your smart home technology and controlled through your smartphone, an in-home remote control or voice commands. In advanced systems, they may be connected to your clock and may open and close automatically at different times of the day. In the bedroom, they may gradually open as your alarm clock goes off to help you wake up more easily and comfortably. The alarm may also be connected to music and the HVAC system to further encourage you to get out of bed.

Weather-Sensing Lawn Irrigation

Lawn irrigation systems are a true convenience because they provide your yard with hydration on a regular schedule. However, homeowners often have to make manual adjustments to their irrigation system’s schedule based on weather conditions. For example, if it recently rained, you may need to manually adjust the system to skip the next scheduled watering session. Modern irrigation systems have weather-sensing features that eliminate the need to manually adjust the settings. These features take into account recent rainfall, temperature and even humidity to determine when the lawn needs to be watered to give the homeowner a completely hands-off experience.

Room Occupancy Sensors

In some homes with advanced smart technology, room sensors detect when people are in the rooms. They automatically turn lights on when someone enters, and they turn the lights off behind them. Likewise, they may adjust the temperature in the room slightly depending on whether or not the room is occupied. Similar technology may tell parents who are not at home when their teens enter and leave the home.

These are only a few of the hot trends in home automation. Many people are progressively updating their homes with new technology as it becomes available and based on their unique needs. Take time to review the features of these hot trends, and learn more about other trends. By doing so, you can determine which technologies you want to incorporate in your home next.
