I finished another one. Yep this time I read the #AskGaryVee Book by Gary Vaynerchuk and I want to share with you some of my thoughts.
For those of you who don't know me, my name is Torey (some call me "T") and I help urbanites interested in real estate connect the dot's between what they think they know and what they really need to know to be successful in today's markets. I have a passion for building businesses too.
An increasingly high number of people are beginning to recognize this book & the author - Gary Vee. Gary is an early pioneer in the social media space and a business leader. One of the YouTube Series Gary runs, the #AskGaryVee Show is becoming a modern phenomenon within the business community. The format is the audience asks questions, and he answers them. This book is an extension of the show and is a place where Gary answers many of the same questions from the show on paper.
Now like I said earlier, In my quest of reading more books, this was next on the list of things to read and now I am through it. So what did I learn?
I am actually not really gonna answer that question as much. Why? Because that question won’t bring you the most context. The question that will bring you the most context is how has the insight I have learned from his content over the years affected me today?
Immensely. As a matter of fact, the backbone of the company I am creating is partially a by-product of his advice to the world. Gary has been speaking a long time now about creating a media company as the way to the future and I completely agree with the logic. Ironically, I am building a real estate media company that is really darn good at selling real estate as we speak. This post is a by-product of that goal.
Another gritty concept I embrace that parallels Gary work is the concept of openness and transparency. He is probably the most voluntarily open businessman I know. I feel as though so much these days and always, people are so closed chested about stupid shit. I guess it is people’s ego, pride, or whatnot, but I can not tell you how many people I know that seem “normal” on the surface, but you darn well know they are hiding something from the world. Now, it is important to note that it is people’s right to privacy, but I am talking in the mindset of growing a business. How will people be able to truly like you if you are not being honest with them?
A perfect example of the above is in my video titled “$7,341.33”. Most of you know right now that that video is a video showing everyone my net income on the year. In my opinion, that number paints the truest picture of the state of my business and the past month’s revenue growth is a strong indicator of where my business is going. Is that info really “personal”? In my opinion, no, but who else have you seen publicly disclose this information voluntarily?
The last point I wanna bring up that will cap this conversation is beyond the chunks of information I learned from watching him over the years, the thing I benefited most from is the unquantifiable, which is certainly conveyed in his #AskGaryVee Book. What I mean is his outlook on the big picture and thinking forward. I have found that my natural thoughts have really been pretty similar to Gary’s. It is one of the most refreshing things to see someone providing positive reinforcement to my personal ideals - which not many people possess.
When all is said and done, reading the #AskGaryVee book for me, was more of another reinforcement of what I have already seen. I mean this extremely positively. It helped smooth over some rough spots I had and provided more insight to my in many small, but meaningful ways. Overall, I would say that the most meaningful things I have taken from the “Gary Vaynerchuk experience” is an unique business direction.
My personal line is always “I am not the person who comes up with the idea, but I am the person who is great execution”. That is where I am now, in the middle of a lifelong pursuit of leaving an impact by touching people a different way through real estate and video. It is up to me to make this a success, but Gary - I sincerely thank you for the spark.
