The Secret Sights of Surrey - Barton Wyatt estate agents in Surrey

Although the main attractions are always great to see and a pretty safe-bet, sometimes it takes discovering the hidden gems of a place to really fall in love with it. As one of the most prestigious estate agents in Surrey, we know this county inside and out and, between us, we have found some pretty amazing places over the years that are far less known to the common traveller! So, being the lovely people that we are, we thought we would let you ladies and gents in on our secrets. Enjoy!

Chilworth Gunpowder Mills

Set up in 1626, this is a sight steeped in history and is now a scheduled ancient monument – though it still remains relatively unknown! You will be hard pressed to find it on any of the tourist websites and it is usually pretty peaceful, making for a beautiful walk in some gorgeous settings. Make sure you read up all about its history before you go!

Redhill Common

For a scenic walk with a panoramic view that looks towards the rolling South Downs, head to Redhill Common. You won’t be surrounded by picture-snapping tourists at the top and will have time for some quiet reflection as you admire the views. It’s certainly something else! A monument for the silver jubilee of King George was placed on the hill in 1935, so be sure to keep your eyes peeled for that.

Ramster Gardens

Ramster Gardens is a beautiful setting full of great trees, delicate flowers and artistic sculptures, as well as the 17th century Ramster hall which the gardens are centred around. With short periods in which the gardens are open, make sure you plan your trip to coincide with the right season! You can check out when the gardens are open on their website.

The Courtyard Theatre

If you’re a fan of independent theatre and not so much of a fan of crowds, head to The Courtyard Theatre in Chipstead. Hidden in a country lane, the theatre is mostly known amongst the locals who will happily rave about how good the productions here are. The theatre seats only 97 people and has a bar, making it super cosy and very fun!

Painshill Park

The Crystal Grotto is a sight to behold and one not to be missed! We’re not even sure why this isn’t a regular on the must-see lists; it’s amazing! The park itself is also home to a gothic tower and a Turkish tent as well as some beautiful scenery, but it’s the crystal grotto that really makes it stand out to us. Dating back to the 1700’s, the grotto is a cave-like structure filled with thousands upon thousands of crystals. Go check it out and you won’t be disappointed!

Here at Barton Wyatt, we love Surrey and all it has to offer, and we know you will too! If you are thinking of packing your bags and finding a new home to settle down in in our beautiful county, get in touch with our estate agents in Surrey today.
