Savannah's Top Parks To Visit

Savannah is known for its historic district and being filled with beautiful parks where you can relax in nature, experience history, and stay entertained for hours. A lot of these places are right next door to beautiful historic properties, Savannah's lucky residents can end up with some of these great parks right in their backyard. Salzburger Park

This park is fairly unique because it contains a large stone monument for the Salzburgers, a group of German Lutherans who traveled to Savannah seeking religious freedom in the 1700s. Due to its origin as a park celebrating the German and Austrian communities of Savannah, this park is a favorite place for cultural events like folk festivals and Mozart concerts. When it is not hosting German and Austrian events, Salzburger park is just a lovely place to relax. It has a children's playground, grassy lawns, and plenty of big, shady oak trees draped in Spanish moss.

Morrell and Emmet Park

Morrell Park is a favorite for people who love waterfront activities. This park stretches along Savannah's riverfront area, and it has some historic features like a statue remembering Florence Martus and the cauldron that was lit in the Savannah Olympic yachting contests.

This park is in a busy part of town, but it is a quiet and peaceful area to sit and enjoy the riverfront. Emmet Park is just across the road from Morrell, making these two smaller parks into one large park. It is named for Irish patriot Robert Emmett, and it contains some historic war monuments and large open fields to relax and play in.

Daffin Park

Daffin Park is a favorite spot for Midtown and Victory manor residents because it is one of the few areas that allow dogs to run around off the leash. This low key park gets a lot of shade from soaring palms, pines, and live oak trees, and its long walkways are a great place to get some exercise with your furry friend. During weekends and summers, you can expect to take part in fun events like food truck rallies and live concerts here.

Chippewa Square Park

Chippewa Square Park is a favorite place to visit for many people because it is the site of the famous bus bench scenes from the movie Forrest Gump. Initially built in 1815 to honor the Battle of Chippewa from the War of 1812, this park region is also home to the oldest surviving church in the city, the Savannah Theater, and the Savannah History Museum. It is packed with plenty of things to do while you enjoy nature.

Mother Matilda Beasley Park

This classic Savannah park is a favorite for families. Situated between several of the great schools of the Eastside area, Mother Matilda Beasley Park has two large playgrounds, a baseball diamond, and a soccer field for kids to enjoy.

On the weekends, you can see people having birthday parties and enjoying barbecues wherever you go. There is even a small part of the park that is fenced in for dogs to enjoy. Mother Matilda Beasley Park also has a great historic backstory. It was built to honor Mother Beasley, one of the first African American nuns and a Georgia resident who founded an orphanage.

Forsyth Park

Of course, no list of Savannah's top parks can be complete without Forsyth Park. This is one of the biggest public parks in Savannah, and it dates all the way back to the 1840s. Forsyth Park is a great place to play, with playgrounds, basketball courts, soccer fields, and tennis courts. It also has a beautiful fountain and a theatre where cultural events are regularly scheduled. Situated in the Victorian District area, Forsyth Park has walking paths that stretch all throughout the 30 acres of the park.
