Home repairs and renovations can seem like overwhelming tasks. Installing windows can be particularly tricky, but learning these four things about window replacement will make the task seem much less daunting.

Windows Replacement

Installing new windows is one of the mundane home maintenance tasks that every homeowner will probably face at one point or another. But that doesn’t mean it has to be an overwhelming chore. Knowledge is power, and there are four things to know before replacing windows that will make the replacement process a breeze. The first thing you need to know is what kind of windows you have and what kind of windows you want. Make sure that the type of window you want to have installed is compatible with the framing you have and the space inside and outside of your house. For example, installing a bay window in a narrow space, or in an area completely blocked off by trees, may not be the best idea.

Second, determine if this window job is something that you can do on your own or something that should be hired out. If you think you can safely and satisfactorily install new windows yourself, then more power to you! But there is no shame in hiring a professional, especially if the windows you are replacing are high up or particularly tricky to maneuver. Not biting off more than you can chew can save you a lot of time, money, and pain in the long run.

In that same vein, make yourself aware of the costs that may be associated with this project, as well as with available contractors. Do some research into the contractors available in your town, and find out what you can about their policies, pricing, and reputations (this is especially important if you are concerned about using non-union labor). Many companies offer free estimates, so get a few to make sure that you’re getting a good deal. Alternatively, if a friend or family member works in this industry, they will probably give you a fair and realistic estimate of what this job should cost. They might even be willing to do the window replacement job for free! Use this information when evaluating window replacement contractors. If you know what parts and labor are necessary for your window replacement job, you will be better equipped to haggle with window repairmen to make sure you get a square deal. By the same token, you should be immediately able to tell which contractors are giving you a good deal, and you’ll know when to jump on it!

Finally, always make sure that you are working in line with any municipal regulations about home renovation. This is especially important if you live in an area with a homeowners association, or in a condo building. These organizations may have their own rules about replacing the windows in your home. If you need to pay any fees or acquire any permits, make sure you do this well before you start replacing your windows.
