Every year we look for the latest in design trends, and there is a lot of variety surrounded by many opinions as to what will be hot or not in home ideas. The National Association of Home Builders recently held their annual awards ceremony for the best in 2016 design projects for homes and communities across the nation.

In reviewing the latest projects up for awards, some surprising, and not so surprising trends were noted, as highlighted in an article published by Builder.com. In looking at the big winners and growing trends, I see a merging of traditional, design features which harken back to the craftsman era of homebuilding, and modern conveniences and amenities. We may live in a digital world, but the beauty of character of older architecture is timeless, as many of the latest trends will attest to.

·      Board & Batten Siding & Paneling. This distinct architectural style features alternating widths of wood boards, broad and narrow, installed either vertically or horizontally, to provide a visual depth to both exteriors and interiors. While more and more areas are embracing a modern sense of style for new buildings, board and batten features provide a classic feel which many still love.  Other traditional wood features making a comeback include shiplap accents, where boards overlap each other, and wooded ceilings with beams taking center stage.

·      Color- Dark Hues & White on White. Neutral colors are the norm when it comes to new construction, or staging your home when listing your property. These tones help ensure the amenities and features of a home are the spotlight, not a color which many may not find attractive. The latest design trends in color include a change from white window and door frames to darker hues, black, or dark brown being most prevalent. These colors work well to add in a point of drama to architecture and help draw in the eye toward main features. White kitchens are still going strong. The clean and bright light you can get from a white on white kitchen can be stunning. Add in a splash of color and the room will pop without going overboard.

     ·      Oversized Showers & Tubs. With our changing demographics, many home designs are looking closely at various age groups, and the needs of different generations when it comes to amenities such as showers and tubs. Wall-to-wall glass showers offer more space to incorporate safety features such as handles and bars, with beauty and class. Extra-large, free-standing tubs are also growing in popularity, providing a classic traditional look, and elegance in modern bathrooms.

·      Unique Spaces. One growing trend is truly inspired by times gone by in architecture design. Many homes built in the late Victorian and throughout the Craftsman era, includes nooks and crannies, with purpose. These are making a comeback as we are rediscovering their allure and practicality. Many new designs are featuring built in benches or reading nooks, an unexpected feature with comfort in mind. There are also more unique approaches to storage solutions being used again, such as under stair closets and built in wine storage spaces.
