Local collector and CEO, Peggy Ann’s iconic Butterfly House was designed in collaboration with the late Naples-based architect Andrea Clark Brown.

NAPLES, FLA. (March 13, 2024) — The architectural marvel known as “Butterfly House” has entered the market for $4,500,000. Located at 1111 12th Street North in the highly desirable Lake Park community, Peggy Ann’s private retreat was personally designed as a work of art. The listing is marketed exclusively by Roberta Zimmerman of Premier Sotheby’s International Realty’s Village office. The listing details may be viewed here.

The Butterfly House is named after its distinctive inverted roof resembling the wings of a butterfly. Peggy Ann, owner and CEO of Empire Level Manufacturing, has been building unique homes like this across the country, many of which have been featured in national publications. She is also a distinguished philanthropist, most notably in her hometown of Milwaukee.

Built by award-winning architect Andrea Clark Brown, the home was later reconstructed by Connor & Gaskins Unlimited in 2018 when Ann rebuilt the inverted roof. Brown praised Ann as “the best interior designer I’ve ever met.” The property was featured in Gulfshore Life Home in 2020 and the American Institute of Architects and Venice Architecture Biennale in 2021.

The entrance is an experience akin to walking through an art gallery. Bespoke elements and fine craftsmanship provide the perfect canvas for a personal collection. Ann ensured that the unique floor plan highlights mixed media from every corner, layering pieces to showcase her love for art in all forms — from paintings to sculptures to furnishings. She credits her visionary design to her ability to orchestrate grand plans cohesively in an artistic way that provokes thought.

Artistry, design and feng shui seamlessly blend with practicality within the elegant sun-soaked interior. Notable features include expansive clerestory windows, concealed baseboards, custom Rudy Art glass in the kitchen and engineered oak flooring by the Lauzon Collection. The deliberate absence of trim throughout the property ensures a harmonious and cohesive visual experience. Pieces displayed on the walls are tastefully integrated into each painted color.

The exterior is surrounded by lush greenery and features a Zen garden, indoor-outdoor spa, fireplace, pool with water feature and custom stone-glass mural, all adorned by hand-mitered Mexican lava rock. The two-bedroom, one-bath guesthouse overlooks the lake.

Andrea Clark Brown, the “Grande Dame of Naples,” was the first female architect to own a firm in Naples. She passed in 2022 but her legacy lives on through her work, her peers and her family, including her husband, artist John Carroll Long, with whom she ran Up Art Contemporary Gallery in Old Naples.

Quote:

“Andrea Clark Brown's legacy is etched into the very walls of The Butterfly House – a masterpiece that has been lovingly curated by its current caretaker. From the baseboards to the ceilings, Brown's intentional and innovative designs are evident throughout this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to own a piece of Neapolitan history.”
