Moving heavy objects can be a huge job! It’s challenging physically and can be very hard on your muscles and back, especially if you are doing it wrong. Next time you go to move a heavy couch, appliance, or a bulky and awkward object, keep these lifting tips in mind. It can help make the job easier and it will be less demanding on your body.

Tip #1: Take apart what you can.

When you’re moving a huge piece of furniture, for example, take apart what you can. To make things lighter, take off or remove parts like knobs, shelves, cushions, legs, racks, and drawers.

Tip #2: Get adjustable moving straps.

Lifting straps can make heavy lifting easier on your back by relying on stronger muscles in your legs and shoulders. These can be adjusted for various lengths and are great for picking up and moving heavy or awkward objects like recliners or refrigerators. These are found online or are usually available at large home supply stores.

Tip #3: Remove door stop molding.

When you’re moving large objects through small spaces, every little inch matters. Sometimes, an extra inch is all you need to make it through a doorway without causing damage to the space or to your furniture piece. If your door doesn’t open wide enough, take it off the hinges and then pry off the door jamb or trim molding. This will give you a little extra space.

Tip #4: Use ramps.

Build a ramp using lumber, scaffolding planks, and/or blocks. This is a great way to load things in and out of a truck or SUV!

Tip #5: Wrap what you can.

When it comes to moving heavy items, try to secure whatever you can before moving. This means using heavy duty plastic wrap around cords, appliance doors, or other tubing in order to prevent dragging or tripping. Plastic wrap is a good way to secure the items rather than bungee cords or tape which can cause damage to the furniture.

Tip #6: Plan where the furniture will land.

Before you move or lift furniture to a new area, know exactly where it will go. If it’s beneficial to sketch out a floor plan with the right measurements, go for it. If you know where it’s going to land in the first place, then you’ll save yourself time and physical exertion later by not having to move it around to the right place.

Tip #7: Get help.

Last but definitely not least, call in reinforcements if you need it. Don’t attempt lifting large objects by yourself because that almost never works and you’ll risk hurting your body. Make moving heavy objects a two person job at least, and if you need more, that’s ok! Don’t transport items alone.
