You may be adding chemicals to hot tub first time for different reasons like cleaning the hot tub, initial treatment of fresh water or weekly maintenance. Regardless of why you’re adding chemicals to your hot tub, it’s important to know how to do so properly. This article will go over the critical steps to adding chemicals to hot tub first time.

For Cleaning the Hot Tub

  • The spa water should be drained out frequently depending upon its use. The frequency can be 8-12 months if it has an ozonator.

  • The spa shell can be sponge cleaned by adding ½ cup bleach in 3-gallon water and drying it with a towel after rinsing it with fresh water.

  • With an increased number of users, its filter should be cleaned on a monthly basis by soaking it overnight in a chemical.  

  • Wring out and rinse scum bugs with fresh water.

  • The spa should be refilled with fresh water up to help of the skimmer top.

  • To ensure priming of the pumps, pumps, and canister should bleed air. You can unscrew a tiny screw on the pumps and filter to release their air.

  • Set your timer to filter the spa at low speed to take 3-12 hours.

Initial Treatment of Fresh Water

  • You can add chemicals to your hot tub once it becomes heats up tp to 30 degrees C or 80 degrees F to dissolve their granules properly.

  • You can add a cap of pH down or pH up to adjust the pH of water from 7.6 to 8.2 after testing it. Before retesting the water pH you should filter it for 30 minutes.

  • You can add a capful of water clarifier and a capful of scale and stain control product and 2 ounces of enzyme supplement to clarify the water by reducing its odors and scum-lines caused due to cosmetic products and body oils.

  • The alkalinity of water can be adjusted to 100, after testing it, by adding spa or alkaline products.

 

Spa water can be sanitized in 3 ways but you should not use chlorine and bromine together. The three ways include:

Completely chlorine free water sanitizing system: Add 2 ounces of activate and 2 ounces enhance to activate bromine salt in enhance without using chlorine. In the case of low bromine, you can use both of these chemicals frequently.

System using bromine tablets: Fill chlorine or bromine in the floating dispenser and out it in spa water. Now add 2 oz. of non-chlorine activate to sock the spa water. You should use this treatment after every large bath load or a few days.  

System using granular chlorine: Add a capful of chlorine granules frequently or after a couple of days after testing the water. To shock the spa you can also add 2-ounce chlorine-less activate

Weekly Maintenance of Hot Tub

  • Adjust alkalinity to 100 and pH to 7.6-8.2 of water after testing it.

  • Now add 1 ounce of a spa clarifier and a capful of scale and stain control product for weekly maintenance of your hot tub. You need not add clarifier if your spa has ozonator as it helps in filtering our small particles. Sanitize the water by using chlorine or bromine. The clean filter in the cartridge by soaking a rinsing it with fresh water once in a month or after every large load of bathers.
