You’ve made it. After countless hours of hard work and sacrifice your business is up and running – but now what? Your next step is to ensure that your website has traffic, your client base is built, referrals are coming in, and your profit margins keep growing – no easy feat. Teaming up with a marketing firm who seems to have the knowledge and capabilities to help get your business noticed is a sure way to drive in business… right?  Not always.

The marketing industry is full of companies who make promises each day that they have the winning strategies to help you grow, but not all are honest.  You’re in the business world, which means that you understand selling yourself and your brand to potential clients is key.   With that being said, these marketing firms can be quick to convince you that they have the secret formula to your success.

So, how do you know that you’re choosing the right company to build your brand?

Investigate on your own.

When you decide to hire a marketing firm, start by checking out their website.   If you are hiring a company to sell your business, shouldn’t they first be selling their own?  Look at their website, social media sites, and ads.  Are they up to date? Are they creative? Informative?  If not, it’s a good indicator that they are all talk and no walk.  If you’re in the “creative” marketing business there is no excuse to not have these nailed down. Make sure that they are providing information and creative sampling in their own marketing, and that it is in line with what you’re looking for.

Talk to the face of the business.

Much like you, any potential marketing firm had to start somewhere.  What did the owner do to build their own business?  Do you and the owner have the same goals and values?  Were they handed the keys to a family member’s company or did they work their way up? Make sure that you trust the person who is promising to help your company grow. You don’t want all of your years of hard work derailed by someone who really doesn’t care. Make sure that whoever you choose is as excited about your business as you!

Responsiveness.

Being responsive is an important part of being successful.  Reach out to any potential firms and ask for more information.  Are they able to provide you with information quickly?  You are going to be working as a team with whomever you decide to hire. It’s important to feel like a priority, and to be confident that your needs will be taken care of.  Everyone is busy during the workweek, but make sure whomever you are teaming up with is available to you when you need them.

Your business is a priority to you, and whoever you hire to take care of your marketing should be a good fit for you and your brand.  Always ask questions and make sure that you feel confident in your decision.  Marketing should be fun and exciting for any business owner.  Good luck!
