There is nothing more exciting, and perhaps more terrifying, for a homeowner than a home improvement project. From concerns about how the finished product will turn out, to the budget, there are always things that can go wrong. But what exactly should you be bracing for? We’ll explore that in detail, below.

Finding The Right Contractors

You can’t feel great in your home unless it looks great, but finding the right contractors for the job may be a hassle. Most homeowners find these via recommendations from friends and family and while that’s a great way to go about it, you should also look at their reviews and make sure you’re dealing with a registered company with a good history. Not only are you protected in case something goes wrong, but you also have an extra layer of assurance that they know what they’re doing.

Furthermore, you should consider what it is you need done before looking up contractors online or asking friends and family for recommendations. As is the case with most things, contractors that claim they are great at everything, will most often be great at nothing, so if for example, you need a painting job done, a contractor like New England Painting may be more suitable for the job than some other that claims to also do everything else.

Do You Need A Permit?

Getting a permit is expensive, time-consuming, and frustrating, but for a lot of the home improvement projects it's necessary and required. Some municipalities charge 1% of the total construction costs to issue the permit and may take up to six weeks to complete the inspections. That's time and money that most homeowners don't have so they end up sidestepping the permit process as a result.

This is not the best solution, though, because of complications that may arise down the road. For example, you may not be able to sell your house if any projects have been done without a permit. Consider if this may be in the cards for you in the future before sidestepping regulation. Moreover, there is no guarantee that a neighbor or anybody else, for that matter, that knows about your home improvement project and is bothered by the noise won’t go to file a complaint and you could face not only a fine, but also, be required to take the project down.

The only way to know if your city requires a permit for a remodeling job is to go to its website or call. If you hire a licensed contractor, he or she will know if the job requires a permit. As the homeowner, it's your responsibility to ensure that all remodeling is completed lawfully. Don't assume the permits were handled by the contractor.

Know The Limits Of Your Skills

Electricians, painters, plumbers, undergo years of training and apprenticeship to learn their trade. The ability to install a light fixture doesn’t make you an electrician, and watching a few Youtube videos about cutting plywood isn’t enough to call yourself a carpenter. Emergency rooms are filled with many ladder-related injuries, so if you don’t feel comfortable with heights, you might want to think twice about climbing on an extension ladder, scraping and painting.

There are also hazards you may encounter if you are working on an older home. Issues like lead paint and asbestos require professional attention. Think about how much more costly your project will become if you end up doing more damage in the first place.

The point is, when you don’t feel ready to undergo a DIY project - don’t. Let the professionals handle it even if you think you’re losing money. In the end, something half-way done will cost you more in the long run.

When it’s time to make improvements to your home, whether it’s for your own pleasure or out of necessity, then never settle for less than the best. You want to make sure that your home and everything inside of it is in good hands. By going with one of the best, you will make sure that only well-trained, certified, and reliable contractors will be handling your most valuable possession.
