We all need more space, but when should you really put your money into renting a self storage unit?

You may have been thinking about all those things that have been left sitting in your garage when you Googled this topic today. And while the self storage industry has been taking the world by storm, do you really need to put your money into a self storage unit? There is money involved and surely moving things around isn’t something that you should do on a whim. So, Supercheap Storage lists a few questions that you should ask yourself before you make a decision!

1) Can I make space?

With all the items in the house, is it just a matter or reorganization that will help you to solve the errant issue? Sometimes, bringing in a few plastic boxes or pretty containers to help you get things a bit more organized can do wonders for the amount of space that you have! Compartmentalization and arrangements can make things more orderly and neat and free up the space around the home. If building a cupboard within your house can help you to put those pots and pans away or create a little more storage space for your clothes, then you might be able to delay hiring a self storage unit for now!

2) Do I need to keep everything?

Some items at home are kept at home purely because we don’t know what to do with them! We know many people would secretly admit that they’ve been hoarding things or starting collections off miscellaneous items that actually don’t have much value in real life. If you can part with these items, perhaps by way of a garage sale or heading down to the local recycling centre, then you’ll be able to make space for yourself without too much of a fuss and the self storage unit can probably wait for another day!

3) Do I have “seasonal” items?

If you have winter clothes, or garden tools that you only use in the summer months, or perhaps you’ve got cooler boxes or Christmas decorations that are taking up a little bit too much space, then a self storage unit may be the right way to go. Many of these items really end up occupying prime real estate in the attic and garage for items which are used much more frequently. A self storage unit is really made for items that need to be kept for long term storage and if you have enough of these seasonal items, the rental on the unit can really be justified!
