Now that you’ve bought your first home, it is time to get familiar with it. Decorating it and making it your own is a fun task, but it’s not the only thing that you’ll have to do around the house. In order for your home to be cozy and function, in the long run, you have to be familiar with all the maintenance tasks that you’ll have to do. Plus, some of these maintenance projects will be a perfect opportunity to even upgrade your home. So, let’s see all the things you need to do to maintain your home healthy.
Clean Your Gutters
Keeping your gutters clean is important for many reasons. When the rain water flows freely where it’s supposed to, you are preserving your roof and walls from getting wet. What’s more, gutter maintenance won’t even cost a lot of money, and it can save you a lot in the long run. You can even clean them yourselves, just be careful not to break the gutters if the leaves and branches in them are too heavy. Ideally, you should clean these twice a year, depending on the weather conditions you have in your area.
Check the Roof and Insulate It
The roof is what protects your home from the outside world, and it’s important to inspect it frequently. Shingles can become dislodged or they could even break or fall off. So, make sure to go up there, or hire a professional, once a year, especially if you have heavy storms in your area. Then you might want to check it even more frequently. Additionally, you should consider getting roof insulation, especially if the weather can get too harsh. You can consider adding attic reflective insulation to the roof to provide that extra layer against any leaks and to keep the roof from overheating during the summer.
Update Bathroom Fixtures
Since there is a lot of water flowing through your bathroom, you need to update the fixtures frequently. Your fixtures can easily get damaged if the water is too hard or if they are older. And all that damage can cause leaks which can be even more damaging to the bathroom. You can easily research some great designs for bathroom fixtures and make sure to replace them at least once in 3 or 4 years. You can do it earlier if you’ve noticed leaks and damage. Also, it is a good idea to consider low-flow fixtures which can save you a lot of water and money in the long run.
HVAC Unit Service
Due to their technical nature, HVAC systems need regular checkups and services. You can find an expert to inspect it and make adjustments and fixes where needed, just to keep the system running smoothly. You can schedule those services at least once a year to prolong your HVAC system’s shelf life and ensure functionality.
Change Filters Regularly
Our homes have a lot of filters. Those are there to the family protected from any germs, bacteria, allergens, and whatnot. So, it is only logical that those filters need to be cleaned and changed frequently. Depending on the filter and appliance that uses them, you should change them monthly, quarterly, or annually. And the filters that you may have that need updates are:
- HVAC unit
- Dishwasher
- Washing machine
- Refrigerator
- Reverse osmosis system
- Air purifiers
- Vacuum cleaners
If you keep those filters clean and upgraded, your home is bound to be clean and healthy.
As you can see, owning a home can be quite a task. However, if you organize properly and keep track of all the maintenance tasks that need to be done throughout the year, your home won’t need too many upgrades. Plus, it will be cozy and provide a safe and healthy environment for your family longer.
