In the real estate industry, extraordinary customer service skills are essential—they set realtors apart from the competition and help them make more sales. Because buying a home is the largest purchase most people will ever make, it’s an extremely important decision with high stakes. Buyers need to be able to trust their agent and feel reassured that they are doing everything they can to help them and provide them with the best possible service.

Providing incredible customer service can be harder than it sounds. You have to be rock-solid on the principles of customer service while simultaneously catering your service experience to the clients you happen to be serving at any given moment. A cookie cutter approach just doesn’t work, especially since realtors work with a wide range of clients. So how can you go above and beyond and improve your customer service skills? Start with these tips.

Take Care of Customers by Taking Care of Yourself

You can’t provide top-notch customer service if you don’t feel your best. Lack of confidence, stress in the workplace, and poor physical health can all bleed into your communications with your client and compromise their trust in you. Improving physical and mental health will actually help you and your colleagues or employees perform better and work better as a team.

It’s also important to ensure that your work environment isn’t contributing stress that could be affecting your customer service performance. Harassment and toxic relationships in the workplace are more common than people realize. In a work environment where workplace bullying affects 75 percent  of office professionals, employers recognize the need to make workers feel safe and develop their skills. Staff members need to work together to create a safe work environment where everyone can thrive.

Customer Service Skills Need to be Developed

We aren’t just born with great customer service skills. It’s something you need to learn and develop. One of the best ways to improve customer service skills is actually to learn to read minds. That sounds more dramatic than it really is, but basically it means that you should anticipate what your clients need instead of waiting for them to ask. You can develop your intuition and sensory acuity to be able to understand people better.

Sometimes, people are hesitant to ask for what they want. Other times, they may not even know what they want in the first place! If you can deliver what the client wants before they even have to ask, you’re giving them the best possible customer service.

Know Your Client's Needs and Desires

A real estate agent needs to be able to understand subtext and respond to spoken and unspoken cues in order to deliver a superior customer service experience. If you can pick up on small clues and put them together to find a client the perfect house, you’re very likely to make the sale and pick up referral business.

People who understand clients’ needs and desires often have a background in other fields working with people. Social workers, for instance, have transferrable skills that make them great realtors. They’re usually familiar with a wide variety of living situations and may be able to help families figure out if what they really want is a rural or urban property, for example. Social workers often learn people skills and become great mediators. They can do well in real estate and often understand other people well. The U.S. Census has classified 95% of the nation’s land area as rural, but just 20% of the population lives in these areas. Realtors who have a background working in a variety of settings, and understand community differences, may be able to deliver the best customer service. Their training in psychology and ability to think creatively can help them serve customers who may have unique requirements.

Be Willing to Develop Your Customer Service Skills

Remembering the small details and anticipating your customer’s needs makes a big difference. Real estate agents have to establish trust quickly and show their clients that they genuinely care about what they want and need from the process. You can rise above the competition by making the effort to improve customer service skills and ensure that you are bringing your energy and empathy to work with you every day. Buying a house should be exciting and full of possibility, not stressful and surprising in all the wrong ways. As an agent, you’re the expert and it’s your job to steer your clients through the process of buying or selling a house with incredible customer service.
