Innovation and Construction - Materials Forming the Industry

Many old buildings and structures were constructed from substandard materials following less-than-current building standards, making you wonder how they are still standing. Usually, people become attracted to architectural design. But did you know that architectural design is only one factor that makes a structure look visually appealing?

Nowadays, construction companies look for newer and better construction materials because of the many benefits that their previous construction materials could not provide. Therefore, if you are currently planning for your construction project, you need to be aware of the different construction materials you can use to improve your structure. 

1. Self-Healing Concrete

The main enemy of contractors is when they encounter cracks on concrete because it's challenging to repair. They need to ensure that they cover all of the tiny cracks and gaps on the concrete to prevent losing its durability. Unfortunately, even the most minor chip on concrete can already cause potential issues. 

Luckily, construction companies can use self-healing concrete for their projects. As the name implies, the concrete heals itself when the surface gets damaged, saving contractors extra time. It heals because of the water-activated bacteria within the concrete that creates calcite to heal cracks. If you want less maintenance on your concrete, try using self-healing concrete. 

2. 3D Graphene

No one back then could have imagined that you would be able to 3D print construction materials. One example is 3D Graphene, a 3D-printed carbon with a steel density of 5% having tremendous strength. It's a material that construction companies use on skyscrapers. They can go as high as 98,000 feet, and the 3D Graphene will still hold up. 

3. Laminated Timber

If you want to include wood during the construction of your building, you have to choose laminated timber. It's considered the "wood of the future" by many because it has exceptional water resistance and strength than your typical wood, like hardwood. You don't have to fret about installing it on exterior surfaces because it will stay strong no matter how many instances it gets soaked under heavy rain. Construction teams use laminated timber to support skyscrapers and significantly reduce at least 150 tons of carbon per building or structure floor. 

4. Modular Bamboo

Another construction material that's durable and can save the environment is modular bamboo. Everyone knows that bamboo is a natural solid material that manufacturers use on many things, such as furniture, bicycles, houses, etc. Construction teams use modular bamboo because it's inexpensive and a fast-growing material. 

One fun fact about bamboo is that it grows up to 36 inches every 24 hours, so you know that construction material suppliers can produce many of them every day. An example of a structure that uses bamboo is the Bamboo Courtyard Teahouse in Yangzhou, China. It may have experienced its fair share of earthquakes, but contractors didn't have to do extensive maintenance because bamboo is an earthquake-resistant material. 

5. Translucent Wood

For example, manufacturers found that they can replace glass skylights with semitransparent wood, a highly sustainable construction material. 

You have various colors to select from, and they can still provide excellent insulation and strength. In addition, you can let in natural light without the expense of harming the environment since you used semitransparent wood. 

6. Light-Generating Concrete

Some people want to conserve energy to the point that they want to eliminate electricity consumption during nighttime. If you're going to reduce electricity consumption at night time significantly, you can use light-generating concrete. It's a non-flammable concrete planted with tiny glass balls to reflect light. You can place translucent signages on light-generating concrete, helping you to reduce your energy bills. 

7. Wool Brick

If you want to achieve maximum building sustainability, don't forget to include wool bricks. It works the same way as a standard brick, but it's 37 times stronger. Inventors found a way to fuse wool and seaweed polymer into bricks, which increased its strength. What makes it better is that it reduces greenhouse gases and increases a structure's cold climate resistance due to the wool material. 

The above-mentioned innovative construction materials are only some of the many available options. Over time, pay attention as you will see more structures with better construction materials, which helps improve living conditions and keep the environment safe.
