When your moving day is looming it'll pay not to put off packing until the very last minute. Thinking ahead will mean you've already answered the moving out questions: do I have enough boxes to pack everything in? And can I be sure my family treasures and delicate objects will be protected while trundling along in the back of a van? For further guidance read the following material prepared by the professional end of tenancy cleaners in London.

BEFORE YOU BEGIN PACKING

  • Make a list and try to prioritise the order in which you pack.
  • This is an ideal opportunity to have a really good clear out. Donate useful items to a charity or take them to a local car boot sale. Or why not try to sell them using an online auction site. Who knows you might make enough money to fund a new item of furniture.
  • Get the right number of packing boxes well in advance. Remember to buy strong sticky tape, labels, sealable bags for those tiny bits and pieces and old newspaper.
  • Check your belongings are covered under your house insurance when they're on the road.
  • Pack a box of "essentials" for when you first walk through your new front door. For example a few tea bags or instant coffee, snacks, cups and a kettle, along with toiletries and most important, toilet paper.
  • Do all your dirty laundry and dry it before your moving day.

PACK SENSIBLY

  • Make sure you allow yourself enough time for this chore. You'll be surprised how many times you stop and reminisce over some long lost family photo or item.
  • Start at the top and work your way down, room by room.
  • Pack heavier items in smaller boxes, to make transportation easier. And remember don't make the boxes too heavy to lift - think about your back.
  • Label each box clearly with what it contains and which room it came from.
  • Individually wrap items and place in a box that is safely packed out with scrumpled up newspaper.
  • Keep important documents all in one safe place.

When you've done all your packing and you're ready to move it's time to give the property a jolly good clean. This needs to be done if you're a tenant and you want to get your deposit back. You can do the hard work yourself or get in a company who offers move out cleaning in London. It's better to clean when everything is packed away and you're ready to roll rather than dust, vacuum and mop around everything that's there. And if you hire some help they'll do an excellent job if there's less getting in the way.
